The Triglyceride/ Hdl Ratio
The triglyceride/HDL ratio is one test, and both are components of the lipid profile. Lipid profiles are routinely ordered to check for total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides levels.
The triglyceride/HDL ratio is the value of the triglyceride divided by the HDL.
A study compared the Triglyceride/HDL ratio among different racial and ethnic groups in the US. The study compared the triglyceride/HDL ratio and fasting insulin. Fasting insulin is another measure of insulin resistance.
In the study , TG/HDL 3.5 correlates with insulin resistance across three BMI categories and three ethnic groups, namely the non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks, and Mexican Americans.
The optimal cut-off point of the TG/HDL-C ratio for predicting insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia was 3.0 for non-Hispanic whites and Mexican Americans and 2.0 for non-Hispanic blacks.
The TG/HDL-C ratio with hyperinsulinemia was stronger among people with a BMI < 25 kg/m2 than those with a BMI 30 kg/m2. The significance of that finding is early detection. High triglyceride levels happen first before excess visceral fat or obesity if obvious. Some people with high triglycerides may not even be obese.

Why Triglyceride/hdl Ratio Predicts Diabetes
Doctors screen for diabetes by ordering a fasting blood sugar. However, some people with pre-diabetes have normal fasting blood sugar levels. Baseline Characteristics Of The Study Population
Table 1 shows the baseline characteristics of the study population based on the TG/HDL-C quartiles. The mean age, BMI, TG levels, HDL-C levels, and TG/HDL-C were 46.1 ± 9.5 years, 23.4 ± 3.0 kg/m2, 124.2 ± 84.9, 53.2 ± 12.6, and 2.64 ± 2.42 mg/dl, respectively.

The group with the highest TG/HDL-C quartile showed the highest mean values of BMI, mean arterial pressure, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, and hsCRP levels, as well as the lowest mean HDL-C levels. Moreover, this group showed the highest proportions of current smokers and alcohol drinkers, as well as the lowest proportion of individuals involved in regular exercise. The prevalence of hypertension, impaired fasting glucose, and metabolic syndrome were 20.3, 18.0, and 12.1%, respectively, which gradually increased according to TG/HDL-C quartiles. There was no sex difference in the age distribution however, men showed a higher TG/HDL-C than women .

Two blood tests that are done during routine physical exams can be used to predict whether you are at increased risk for a heart attack . It’s called the triglyceride/HDL ratio, calculated by dividing your triglycerides number by your HDL number.

Which Medications Improve Tg/hdl
- Statins. The major impact of statins on TG/HDL is to lower TG. But usually, statins are given to lower LDL. Sometimes they can also increase HDL levels but still not as much as how they lower TG. They can lower TG by as much as 50% .

What Should Your Results Include
As a minimum, you should be given your total cholesterol and HDL , then you can work out your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol .
You might also have your triglycerides tested, these are another type of blood fat which are linked to heart disease.
This is sometimes written as ‘serum cholesterol’ or ‘TC’ and refers to your overall level of cholesterol.
Your HDL cholesterol helps clear the cholesterol out of your arteries, while your LDL cholesterol can clog them up. Your HDL cholesterol should ideally be high, around 1.4mmol/L, but our specialists believe that HDL levels higher than this might not give you any extra benefit.
You might be given a TC:HDL ratio, which is the ratio of HDL compared to the total cholesterol. If not, you can work it out from your HDL and total cholesterol numbers. This should be as low as possible. Above 6 is considered high.
