What About A Combination Of Metamucil With A Healthy Lifestyle Like Pritikin

Metamucil to Lower LDL Cholesterol with Metamucil (with Dr. James OKeefe)

Thats certainly an option. Several studies have found that psyllium therapy is an effective adjunct to healthy dietary recommendations like the Pritikin Eating Plan.

In one study,5 for example, researchers divided overweight and obese individuals into 4 different groups:

  • Group 1 followed a healthy, fiber-rich diet.
  • Group 2 ate their normal diet but added a psyllium supplement.
  • Group 3 consumed a healthy, fiber-rich diet plus the psyllium supplement.
  • Group 4 simply swallowed a placebo.

After 3 months, the scientists found that adding psyllium fiber supplementation to a normal diet was sufficient to obtain beneficial effects in metabolic risk factors like cholesterol and glucose levels. However, a psyllium supplement plus a healthy, fiber-rich diet provided the greatest improvements in metabolic syndrome risk factors, concluded the authors.

Psyllium And Treatment/prevention Of Diarrhea

Psyllium is a nonfermented gel-forming fiber for which the gel arrives intact in stool.28,49,50 The high water-holding capacity of the intact psyllium gel has been shown to be effective for normalizing stool form and improving bowel function in chronic diarrhea,85 lactulose-induced diarrhea,86 ulcerative colitis,87 phenolphthalein-induced diarrhea,64,88 fecal incontinence,89,90 and enteral nutritioninduced diarrhea.9195 In a randomized cross-over study that compared psyllium with loperamide in 25 patients with chronic diarrhea, both treatments significantly reduced BM frequency, but psyllium was significantly more effective than loperamide for increasing stool consistency and decreasing urgency.85 In a randomized cross-over study that induced acute diarrhea in healthy subjects with lactulose , psyllium significantly slowed gastric emptying, colonic transit, and fermentation of lactulose.86 A randomized study in 120 outpatients with ulcerative colitis showed that psyllium significantly improved bowel function, as assessed by the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire.87

Modify Your Eating Habits

A great way to lower your cholesterol naturally is to start by replacing unhealthy fats with healthy fats .

This means becoming a food label reader, says Dr. Cho. Its important to limit your saturated fat intake. There should be no more than 2 grams of fat per serving and it should account for less than 7% of your daily calorie intake.

Saturated fats are most often found in palm oil and coconut oil, along with animal products like beef, pork, chicken skin, hot dogs and regular cheese.

Is Miralax Or Metamucil More Effective For Constipation

While both Metamucil and Miralax are designed to relieve constipation, they are both fundamentally different products. Metamucil is a fiber supplement that utilizes psyllium as its dietary fiber source. Miralax is an osmotic laxative, binding water to the stool for easier passage.

Metamucil, because it is a fiber supplement, has other purposes and health benefits than Miralax. For sufferers of chronic constipation, Metamucil is often the starting point. And if extra fiber doesnt work, then a laxative should come into effect.

Metamucil may not immediately relieve constipation, and in fact, its labeling suggests that for those new to taking Metamucil, to begin with, small doses.

Taking too much Metamucil at once can lead to these side effects:

  • Bloating
  • Excess gas
  • Digestive issues

For immediate alleviation of constipation, take Miralax. Miralaxs singular purpose is constipation relief by binding water to stools. Miralax has hundreds of customer reviews to back its effectiveness in ending constipation while taking this product.

Regardless of which product you take for constipation, make sure that you consult with your doctor beforehand and follow the packaging instructions. Metamucil should be taken an hour before or after other medications. Both products should be consumed with plenty of water.

Should You Use Metamucil To Lower Ldl Cholesterol

Metamucil is a rich source of psyllium husk. Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber which works to lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Currently the American Heart Association recommends everyone consume 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber daily. The average American only consumes 15 grams of fiber daily.

Why do most people fall short? Top sources of dietary fiber include legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. How many servings do you eat of these foods daily? If you are like most Americans your intake of processed foods tends to be greater than high fiber food sources.

For a recap of the different types of fiber soluble and insoluble refer to the previous post Dietary Fiber: 4 Tips to Lower Cholesterol with Fiber.

How much soluble fiber?

If you are going to incorporate fiber in your treatment plan to lower LDL cholesterol, youll want to aim for 10-25 grams of soluble fiber daily. Keep in mind, your total dietary fiber intake will be higher, right here we are just talking about the soluble fiber portion. If you eat a standard American diet your total soluble fiber intake is probably only 3-4 grams per day. Youll want to add legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to your daily diet as you work to increase your soluble fiber intake. You may want to use the psyllium husk of Metamucil to supplement your dietary intake. Using the capsules you could add an extra 2-5 grams of soluble fiber to your daily intake.

Will this psyllium husk really help?

Warnings Of Benefiber And Metamucil

It is important to take Benefiber and Metamucil products with adequate amounts of fluid. Taking fiber therapy without adequate fluid intake can lead to esophageal blockage and choking. Do not take these products if you have difficulty swallowing. If you experience chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty in swallowing or breathing, seek medical attention immediately.

If you experience constipation for more than seven days or if you experience rectal bleeding while taking Benefiber or Metamucil, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Benefiber and Metamucil powders are gluten-free, though some other products made by these brands may not be. Patients with celiac disease should read the label and consult a healthcare professional to ensure the fiber product they have chosen is safe.

Benefits Of Psyllium Fibre

  • Laxative Effect: Increasing colonic bulk stimulates propulsion . Psyllium husk provides the bulk that gives your colon something to grip on to and strengthen against like a resistance band. It increases stool weight, while toning the smooth muscle that is the colon and promotes laxation by increasing the moisture content of our poop.
  • Anti-Carcinogenic Effect: The structure of psyllium fibre is like a magnet to toxic waste in the digestive system it grabs on for dear life and removes it from our bodies. In short, it helps remove waste efficiently.
  • Intestinal Health: The colon of the human gastrointestinal tract contains a large population of resident bacteria. In fact, 55% of the solids in poo is microbial biomass. Psyllium is awesome at maintaining the bacterial balance in our colon, which then strengthens immune function.
  • The Great Sponge: Psyllium can absorb a huge mass of water and other stuff. It has the ability to absorb excess bile, cholesterol and hormones like estrogen from the colon. If these arent removed efficiently, they get reabsorbed but this doesnt mean the body stops producing them. The body will still produce cholesterol and so cholesterol levels go up. The body will still produce estrogen and so estrogen levels go up. And do we all know what high estrogen levels mean? Weepy tantrums during PMS and greater breast cancer risk to name two.

Dietary And Lifestyle Changes

How to Reduce LDL Cholesterol with Metamucil (with Dr. James OKeefe)

Dietary and lifestyle adjustments are key to making lasting changes in cholesterol levels.

Although they might not produce results as quickly as medications do, a person may notice their cholesterol levels drop in just a few weeks or months if they stick to a healthy diet and lifestyle plan.

Increase intake of plant foods

Plant foods are rich in vitamins and nutrients, and they do not contain cholesterol. Most plant foods also do not contain saturated fats, which may increase cholesterol in the body.

A 2017 study found that the people who ate vegetarian diets had significantly lower cholesterol levels than the participants following omnivorous diets.

The authors also note that some targeted diets using plant foods might cause stronger effects. For example, a diet rich in soluble fiber, plant sterols, and vegetable protein sources, such as soy and nuts, reduced LDL cholesterol by an average of 28.6% in just 4 weeks.

These effects continue over the long term. A 2018 study estimates that this type of diet reduces the 10-year risk of coronary heart disease by about 13%.

People who need to reduce their cholesterol quickly can work with a dietitian to create a targeted diet plan.

Increase fiber intake

While adding plant foods to the diet increases fiber intake naturally, it may also be helpful to take a fiber supplement or over-the-counter fiber drink to support the body.

Fiber keeps the digestive system healthy and may help prevent the body from absorbing cholesterol.

How Fiber Supplements Can Lower Your Cholesterol Improve Your Heart Health

Grandmother was right that a fiber supplement will make your digestive system more regular. But did you know that these supplements can help you control your levels of bad cholesterol too?

More than 71 million people have high levels of LDL cholesterol, the undesirable cholesterol that increases the likelihood of having a heart attack, stroke or other conditions related to coronary heart disease.

In the past, the single best way to lower LDL levels, other than through lifestyle modifications, was to take a statin drug.

But studies now show that psyllium, the same dietary fiber supplement your grandma used as a laxative, helps lower LDL and total cholesterol, too.

How To Take Metamucil

Take Metamucil with at least 8 ounces of water or another liquid. If the powder is too thick and causes difficulty swallowing, add extra liquid to thin the mixture. Do not take more than recommended on the label or prescribed by your doctor. Psyllium can inhibit the absorption of some medications, so take medication at least two hours before or after taking Metamucil.

What Is Metamucil Psyllium Fiber

Metamucil is a soluble and insoluble fiber supplement made from the psyllium husk of the dried Plantago ovata seed.

Psyllium is generally regarded as safe by the FDA and is used in commercial cereals and as a food thickener in products like ice cream.

Sold in the United States since 1934 as a medicine to help with constipation and mild diarrhea, in recent decades, Metamucil has claimed to support heart health by lowering cholesterol, support healthy blood sugar levels, and support appetite control.

Metamucil comes in several different forms, including sweetened powders that are mixed into water and a capsule form these are the main focus of this article.

Metamucil also has a newer gummy product marketed as a prebiotic supplement made with different ingredients, chicory root and corn fiber, instead of psyllium.

Can It Aid Weight Loss

Several studies have focused on the potential weight loss effects of Metamucil and psyllium.

For instance, one study in 51 people with type 2 diabetes found that supplementing with psyllium , blood sugar levels, and body weight, compared with a control group .

Another study observed similar findings, noting that psyllium improved blood sugar control and decreased body mass index in 40 people with type 2 diabetes .

Studies also show that psyllium may help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, which may be especially beneficial for weight loss.

In fact, one review showed that supplementing with soluble fiber and psyllium fiber, in particular may help keep you feeling fuller for longer between meals .

Similarly, another small study found that taking Metamucil before breakfast and lunch for 3 days led to reductions in hunger and the desire to eat, as well as increased fullness between meals .

However, despite these potential benefits, Metamucil or similar fiber supplements shouldnt be used as a weight loss product.

Instead, try to increase your intake of soluble fiber through foods like fruits, vegetables, and legumes. These foods can help you increase your fiber intake to support weight loss, and they supply important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to improve your overall health.

Although studies show that Metamucil may be beneficial for weight loss, there are a few side effects to consider.

When Did Metamucil Start

Psyllium husk has been used as an excellent fiber source for centuries. However, it wasnt until 1934 when the product began getting marketed by Metamucil, which is now the official name for the psyllium husk and powder.

Today, there are various ways to take Metamucil, as it is offered in Metamucil powder, Metamucil wafers, and even Metamucil capsules.

There are also different versions of Metamucil, including:

  • Premium Blend Sugar-Free Orange Powder
  • Sugar-Free Orange Smooth Powder
  • Avoids constipation
  • Improves the digestive system

According to the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Mixed fibre and psyllium were equally efficacious in improving constipationand relieving flatulence and bloating. Plus, the British Journal of Nutrition found that psyllium husk could help reduce blood pressure.

Dietary fiber in general can be beneficial as well. According to the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, dietary fiber may play a beneficial role in inflammation of the bowels, while research in Nutrition Todayfound that these kind of fiber supplements can help gastrointestinal health.

When Should I Take Metamucil

How to Lower LDL Cholesterol with Metamucil (with PA Brad Biskup)

To get the cholesterol-lowering benefit, take 1 teaspoon of Sugar-Free Metamucil with a full glass of water no more than 15 to 30 minutes before a meal.

The psyllium needs to be in your GI tract the same time as your meal. Once it reaches your stomach, it starts dissolving into a gel-like substance. It binds with the bile acids that form cholesterol, and in doing so, mops up cholesterol. More cholesterol ends up in your bowel movements, and less ends up being reabsorbed in the blood.

A diet full of whole, naturally-fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes , and whole grains is far more effective than supplements like Metamucil for lowering LDL cholesterol.

Many adults strive to lower their cholesterol levels to prevent the risk of heart disease. Specifically, doctors advise that patients actively work to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, a type of cholesterol that is strongly linked to heart diseases.

Studies have brought forth results proving that fiber supplementation can significantly aid in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. According to the findings of a study published in 2011, fiber supplements that utilize bulking agents resulted in a lowering of LDL cholesterol, specifically those derived from psyllium.

Metamucil advertises a lowering of cholesterol levels, stating that a diet low in saturated fat and the inclusion of 7 grams of soluble fiber from psyllium husk can reduce heart disease risks by lowering cholesterol levels. Metamucil employs the use of psyllium as its source of dietary fiber.

Customers on Amazon review Metamucil as a product that benefitted them in lowering cholesterol levels. Customers also state that Metamucil helped with maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, too.

The packaging on Metamucil suggests consulting with your doctor before using it as a means to lower LDL cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol levels, ask your doctor if Metamucil is an appropriate product to aid in reducing them.

Fiber Supplements That May Not Lower Ldl

There are other soluble fiber supplements that do not have studies in place to support their use in lowering cholesterol levels. These can still be used for digestive health.

  • Polycarbophil : Polycarbophil is a form of soluble fiber. Studies have not been able to show that it can lower LDL cholesterol in comparison to psyllium and methylcellulose.
  • Wheat Dextrin : Wheat dextrin is a nonviscous form of soluble fiber. It is not able to form a gel-like material within the small intestine and therefore cannot bind cholesterol.
