A Health Drink Not Quite
It is one thing to say that coffee may be good for you; it’s another to say it’s so good for you that drinking it should be recommended. And we’re not there yet.
All of the favorable studies and all of the seemingly healthful ingredients in coffee are good news for coffee drinkers. They can relax and enjoy their habit. And people who don’t drink coffee can find plenty of other things to do to help keep themselves healthy.

There are many different varieties of coffees, but they are fundamentally prepared in two ways: filtered and unfiltered. Filtered coffees are the most common method of preparation in the United States and involve brewing the coffee through a filter. Unfiltered coffees, also known as boiled coffees,” do not employ a filter and include espresso, Turkish coffees, and French press coffees.
Generally speaking, unfiltered coffee poses the greatest potential risks if you have been diagnosed with hyperlipidemia .
A 2012 review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, evaluating 12 different studies with over 1,000 participants, concluded that regular consumption of unfiltered coffee increases not only a person’s total cholesterol but also their “bad” low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
According to the researchers, the effects were dose-dependent, meaning that higher consumption of unfiltered coffee corresponded to higher TC and LDL increases. By contrast, drinking filtered coffee had no notable effect on either TC or LDL levels.

Blended beverages, such as frappuccinos and many store-bought breakfast drinks, are coffees that contain added syrups, sugar, excess milk/cream, and other ingredients. Is Coffee Good For Weight Loss
The answer is yes but take in moderation. Drinking brewed coffee many times a day can be harmful to the human body and should be avoided immediately.
Brew coffee quickly by using instant espresso/ coffee powder. Having a cup of coffee at noon or during the evenings is a healthy refreshing option.
Coffee contains caffeine which basically stimulates the nervous system and it also gives the actual strong flavour in the drink.
There is much-decaffeinated coffee available in markets that are sold and can be consumed for mild flavours.

You have a problem. You must fast for 12 hours before your blood test, but you have a real dependence on coffee or caffeine. You need that cup of caffeinated energy before you even walk out the door. Otherwise, grogginess, a headache and a general feeling of malaise may set in.
May we suggest that you get up earlier than your usual coffee time and arrive at the laboratory as early as possible? The only problem is, many medical testing labs open at 8 a.m., well past the time most people are up and getting ready to take on the day. And the busiest time of the day for most labs is 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Coffee’s Other Effects On Cholesterol
When we think about cholesterol, we generally think that “high” means “bad.” And, while this is certainly true with LDL cholesterol, increased levels of HDL cholesterol are generally considered a good thing.
Among its benefits, HDL cholesterol absorbs excess cholesterol in the blood and carries it back to the liver where it is flushed out of the body. Increases in HDL generally correspond to decreases in the risk of heart disease and stroke.
A 2020 study in the Journal of Nutrition reported that while high consumption of unfiltered espresso did, in fact, increase TC and LDL levels in both men and women, it also increased “good” HDL and decreased “bad” triglyceride levels. Decreased triglycerides are linked to a lower risk of heart disease.
The same study also noted that regular consumption of tea and instant coffee had no detrimental effect on a person’s blood lipid profile.

Be Mindful Of What You Put In Your Coffee
Though the research is mixed on whether coffee itself can raise your cholesterol levels, researchers do know that saturated fat increases your cholesterol levels. And saturated fat can be found in a lot of things we put in coffee. Here are a few to avoid or enjoy sparingly.
- Cream and half-n-half. The classic coffee lighteners made with whole-fat milk have high levels of saturated fat, which has been shown to increase levels of LDL cholesterol. More cholesterol-friendly choices include nonfat or low-fat options or plant-based milks with no saturated fat.
- Sweet coffee drinks. Those frothy, sugary coffee concoctions popping up at more and more coffee shops have more in common with a milkshake than a cup of coffee and, besides packing in a lot of sugar, may contain ingredients high in saturated fat. Ask about ingredients before you indulge.
- Bulletproof coffee. Popular with fans of the ketogenic diet, bulletproof coffee is a breakfast substitute that calls for adding butter and coconut oil into your daily cup of joe. Both have high levels of saturated fat and there have been several case reports of people who regularly drink bulletproof coffee having sharp rises in their LDL cholesterol.
The bottom line for coffee and cholesterol is the same as many foods and beverages: Enjoy it in moderation, be mindful of how it is made, and know what ingredients are going into it.

Does Alcohol Influence Cholesterol Levels
Alcohol is a fixture in our society many people consume at least a small amount almost every day. Although many studies do not attribute any good properties to alcohol in any quantities, the positive effect of moderate amounts of alcohol on the cardiovascular system cannot be denied. But what about cholesterol?
According to long-term studies at the University of Tampere in Finland, alcohol in small amounts leads to a reduction in LDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL cholesterol. In contrast to HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol is the bad variety! So should one drink alcohol to balance the level of cholesterol? This question is easy to answer: No. In larger quantities the risks outweigh the benefits. The increase in HDL cholesterol and the associated benefits are also rather marginal. The total cholesterol balance is affected just as much total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol rise to the same extent.

Cutting Back May Help
Researchers are unsure why decaffeinated coffee negatively impacts cholesterol levels, but authors note that the AHA study is the first non-industry-sponsored research showing the potentially negative impact of decaffeinated coffee on heart heath. Caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees are often made from different species of beans, according to the AHA study. Caffeinated coffee is typically made from arabica beans, while decaffeinated coffee is often made from robusta beans. The difference in the type of beans may play a role in their effects. Keep in mind that the study used the dose of 3 cups of coffee per day, which the AHA reports as the average consumption in the U.S. The authors of the study report that drinking 1 cup of decaf coffee per day is unlikely to have a relevant impact.

Taken from my previous post, this table shows several polymorphisms that have an association with increased levels of LDL. Importantly, none were directly correlated with an increased risk of heart disease.
However, it is important to note that these studies were performed on normal populations, not ones supplementing their diet with very high levels of saturated fat. It remains unknown whether the risk alleles result in the production of more LDL regardless of lipid level, or if this would be altered when undertaking a high fat diet. Additionally, it is unknown if there are any functional differences in LDL associated with these polymorphisms which when in association with high blood triglyceride levels may prove harmful to heart health.
