Why Is Beet Juice Good For You

Beet juice has lots of essential nutrients but the big benefits come from its nitrate content. Nitrates, like nitric oxide, help with blood flow in the body and are usually found veggies, like leafy greens or root vegetables because they absorb nitrates from the soil.

Whats interesting is that the benefits you can get from the nitrate content in veggies is usually more pronounced in men. Mens bodies arent as good at storing nitrates naturally, so a boost of dietary nitrate is useful.

But nitrates are only one of the benefits of beetroot juice. Beet juice is a good source of Vitamin C, iron and folate, to name just a few.

To learn a bit more about why these vitamins and minerals are actually good for you, keep reading! Ill tell you a bit more about beet juice benefits below.

The Differences Between Garlic Beetroot And Watermelon

In garlic one of the main active ingredients is thought to be a chemical called allicin which is released when you chop or crush garlic. Its believed to act on our kidneys, changing levels of hormones and causing the blood vessels to open up.

For beetroot, the active ingredient is nitrate – present in both the leaves AND the root.

When we eat beetroot, bacteria that live in the mouth turn the nitrate in the beetroot into nitrite and this in turn is thought to get changed into nitric oxide which causes the blood vessels to dilate lowering our blood pressure.

In watermelon, the active ingredient is called L-citrulline and this also works by increasing the levels of nitric oxide which again dilates our blood vessels and so lowers blood pressure.

Cautions When Drinking Beet Juice

The study authors found no side effects in people consuming beet juice. But when considering whether to have beet juice, it’s important to realize that no patients in this study were taking nitroglycerin, other nitrate preparations, or phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors a medication class used most often for erectile dysfunction and sold under brand names like Viagra and Cialis. The combination of inorganic nitrates with these medications may cause a significant drop in blood pressure. In addition, everyone in this study had high blood pressure before consuming beet juice. Since beet juice lowers blood pressure, people who have naturally low blood pressure should use caution when drinking it, as it may result in an unsafe drop in blood pressure.

Beet juice could be an exciting new therapy for people who have high blood pressure and have developed some degree of heart wall stiffening. It can help lower blood pressure, and more importantly improve exercise capacity and endurance. Maintaining a healthy exercise regime and activity level is important for nearly everyone who has heart disease or wants to prevent it. Beet juice also had very interesting blood pressure-lowering benefits that in the future may benefit people who are looking at ways to lower their blood pressure.

How To Reduce Your Blood Pressure Without Medication

This past November, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology issued new guidelines for when high blood pressure should be treated. For the first time in 14 years, theres no more prehypertension. If your blood pressure is running over 130/80, you officially have high blood pressure.

I never gave much thought to my blood pressure. Its always been spot on at 120/80 or a little bit lower . But like the rest of the world, Im getting a bit older, and Ive been dealing with some stressful stuff in my life recently, and apparently, its starting to affect my blood pressure. Not quite enough to require medication, but I do need to keep an eye on it.

Needless to say, Im pretty upset, because Im one of those people who eats well, exercises most days, Im not overweight, and I do all the right things to stay healthy. Unfortunately, Im also very much of a type A personality, so I get stressed easily, and I let too many things bother me.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Damage to your blood vessels occurs every time your pressure is elevated. The new guidelines are meant to make people more aware of that earlier. Its their hope that more awareness earlier can help prevent the damage that would occur if you waited for a later diagnosis.
