Cholesterol And Healthy Eating

What we eat has an impact on our cholesterol levels and can help reduce our risk of disease. Try to eat a wide variety of foods from each of the five food groups. Not only does this help to maintain a healthy and interesting diet, but it provides essential nutrients to the body.

The Heart Foundation recommends:

  • Plenty of vegetables, fruits and wholegrains.
  • A variety of healthy protein sources , legumes , nuts and seeds. Smaller amounts of eggs and lean poultry can also be included in a heart healthy diet. If choosing red meat, make sure it is lean and limit to 1-3 times a week.
  • Unflavoured milk, yoghurt and cheese. Those with high blood cholesterol should choose reduced fat varieties.
  • Healthy fat choices nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and their oils for cooking
  • Herbs and spices to flavour foods, instead of adding salt.

Also, be mindful on how much you are eating and whether you are filling up on unhealthy foods. Portion sizes have increased over time and many of us are eating more than we need which can lead to obesity and increase our risk of cardiovascular disease.

Ideally, a healthy plate would include servings of ¼ protein, ¼ carbohydrates and ½ vegetables.

Serving size can vary depending on age, gender and specific nutrition needs.

Educate Yourself About High Cholesterol

There are two types of cholesterol : HDL and LDL . Need an easy way to remember it? Look at the first letter. You want the good cholesterol to be high, while the bad cholesterol should be lower. Cholesterol can also affect the level of your triglycerides, which is the amount of fat in your blood. Drinking alcohol can raise your triglycerides, and too much alcohol can cause high blood pressure, which creates a potentially deadly cocktail for heart disease.

What numbers should be your goal? The Centers for Disease Control provides this useful information:

Total cholesterol Less than 200 mg/dLLDL Less than 100 mg/dLHDL 40 mg/dL or higherTriglycerides Less than 150 mg/dL

If your cholesterol is too high, try lowering it by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Speaking with your doctor about medication

Need more information? Visit the Centers for Disease control website for extensive educational materials on cholesterol, and speak with your doctor about what you can do now for a healthier heart later.

The Worst Foods For Your Cholesterol Levels

Top 10 Foods Containing Trans Fats (Culprit Behind Belly Fat)

Our fast-paced modern life has thrown up many challenges and we tend to compromise on many things. We always seem to be in a rush to catch up on something or the other and in the process the first thing we ignore is what we eat and how we eat. That, more than anything else, is responsible for high cholesterol levels.

Now, nowyou know this is not good for you!

Diet modification, coupled with exercise, is the best solution for lowering cholesterol levels but the sad part is that most of us tend to spend money on statin drugs rather than look for natural solutions. Simply avoiding foods that increase cholesterol can go a long way in reducing cholesterol levels in your body.

If you want to control cholesterol in your body, be sure to avoid the following foods.

1.Butter. Who doesnt love butter? In fact fats add to the taste of food. But at the same time, it is not healthy for you if you have high cholesterol. It is actually one of the richest sources of cholesterol. One tablespoon of butter can contain almost 30mg of cholesterol.

2.Shortening. Shortening is a semisolid fat used for preparing baked foods. It is 100% fat as compared to 80% in butter. What is more important to note is that it is made from hydrogenated oils, which are loaded with trans-fat. Avoid eating pie crusts and fried foods.

8.Pizza. The only thing good in a slice of cheese pizza is the tomato sauce, the rest of it is all high in cholesterol.

Don’t Forget Your Fruits And Vegetables

A common mistake that many Americans make is not eating enough fruits and vegetables each day, but our dietitians warn that this habit can hinder your goal of trying to lower your cholesterol levels.

Fruits and veggies contain high amounts of antioxidants, which have shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels by reducing LDL oxidation and preventing the formation of plaque in your arteries,” says Courtney D’Angelo, MS, RD, author at Go Wellness. “There are plenty of ways to add extra fruit into your daily diet and create a great habit out of it. For example, you can make a protein smoothie in the morning and add blueberries, strawberries, or your choice of fruit.”

Whole Grains Especially Oats And Barley

Extensive research ties whole grains to lower heart disease risk.

In fact, a review of 45 studies linked eating three servings of whole grains daily to a 20% lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Benefits were even greater when people ate more servings up to seven of whole grains per day .

Whole grains keep all parts of the grain intact, which provides them with more vitamins, minerals, plant compounds and fiber than refined grains.

While all whole grains may promote heart health, two grains are particularly noteworthy:

  • Oats: Contain beta-glucan, a

Fruit is an excellent addition to a heart-healthy diet for several reasons.

Many types of fruit are rich in soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol levels .

It does this by encouraging your body to get rid of cholesterol and stopping your liver from producing this compound.

One kind of soluble fiber called pectin lowers cholesterol by up to 10%. Its found in fruits including apples, grapes, citrus fruits and strawberries .

Fruit also contains bioactive compounds that help prevent heart disease and other chronic diseases due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Eating berries and grapes, which are particularly rich sources of these plant compounds, can help increase good HDL and lower bad LDL cholesterol .

Eat A Variety Of Unsaturated Fats

12 Most Filling Foods for Fat Loss (eat these daily!)

Two main kinds of fats are found in food: saturated and unsaturated.

On a chemical level, saturated fats contain no double bonds and are very straight, allowing them to pack together tightly and stay solid at room temperature.

Unsaturated fats contain at least one double bond and have a bent shape, preventing them from joining together as tightly. These attributes make them liquid at room temperature.

Research shows that replacing most of your saturated fats with unsaturated fats can reduce total cholesterol by 9% and bad LDL cholesterol by 11% in just eight weeks .

Longer-term studies have also found that people who eat more unsaturated fats and fewer saturated fats tend to have lower cholesterol levels over time .

Foods like avocados, olives, fatty fish and nuts contain ample heart-healthy unsaturated fats, so its beneficial to eat them regularly .

Summary Eating more unsaturated fats and fewer saturated fats has been linked to lower total cholesterol and bad LDL levels over time. Avocados, olives, fatty fish and nuts are especially rich in unsaturated fats.

Food Supplements That Do Not Help With Cholesterol

Many extracts and supplements have been promoted for their overall health benefits and lipid-lowering effects, but do they work?

We reviewed the available scientific research and found that the following supplements had no good evidence to support those claims:

  • Selenium: Supplements may help lower cholesterol in people with low levels of selenium, but not in people with normal levels of selenium. There is not enough scientific evidence to say that selenium protects against cardiovascular disease.

  • Calcium: Results here are mixed, but the bottom line is calcium supplementation does not improve cholesterol levels.

  • Garlic supplements: Raw, powdered, and aged garlic supplements had no effect on cholesterol levels.

  • Policosanol: This substance, which is extracted from sugar cane wax, did not improve cholesterol.

  • Coconut oil supplements: There is mixed evidence about the cardiovascular benefits or harm of coconut oil. It is not an evidence-based alternative treatment for high cholesterol levels.

  • Coconut water: There is no high-quality data about coconut water improving cholesterol levels.

  • Resveratrol supplements: There is no evidence that these improve cholesterol levels in humans.

  • Soy isoflavones supplements: Taking supplements of soy isoflavones does not improve cholesterol levels.

Why Exercise Is Effective At Lowering Cholesterol

Cholesterol is one of the fatty substances we have circulating in our blood. If we have too much, it can stick to the inside walls of our arteries, narrowing them and increasing risk of cardiovascular disease.

Its not only the amount of cholesterol in the blood that affects our risk, though. Other factors play a part. One of these is the type of protein that carries the cholesterol through the body. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is more likely to cause problems. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol protects the body from cholesterol buildup.

Exercise helps increase levels of HDL good cholesterol. Researchers reported on this in Lipids in Health and Disease. Physically active women had significantly higher levels of HDL cholesterol than sedentary women. Another study published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology found similar results. In men with belly fat, regular endurance exercise increased HDL good cholesterol levels.

Exercise may even change the nature of our cholesterol. In 2002, researchers from Duke University Medical Center found that exercise improved the number and size of the particles carrying cholesterol through the body. Those who exercised more had larger, fluffier particles that were less likely to clog arteries.

Add Coconut Oil To The Diet

Lose Belly Fat But Don’t Eat These Common Foods

Studies have shown that coconut oil may reduce appetite, increase metabolic rate, and help protect brain health, among other benefits.

Some people may be concerned about coconut oils effects on heart health due to its high saturated fat content. However, it appears that coconut oil is actually quite heart-healthy.

Some studies have shown that coconut oil tends to raise HDL cholesterol more than many other types of fat.

In addition, some studies have shown that coconut oil may improve the ratio of low-density lipoprotein , or bad, cholesterol to HDL cholesterol. Improving this ratio reduces heart disease risk .

One study examined the health effects of coconut oil consumption in 40 females with excess abdominal fat. The researchers found that those who took coconut oil daily had increased HDL cholesterol and a lower LDL-to-HDL ratio.

In contrast, the group who took soybean oil daily had a decrease in HDL cholesterol and an increase in the LDL-to-HDL ratio .

However, more recent reviews suggest that the research into coconut oil and cholesterol is of poor quality, is not conclusive, and often reports that coconut oil can raise the levels of LDL cholesterol. Therefore, more research is needed .

Most studies have found that these health benefits occur at a dosage of about 2 tbsp of coconut oil per day. It is best to incorporate this into cooking rather than eating spoonfuls of coconut oil on their own.
