In one study, researchers studied 40,530 Japanese adults over 11 years. Those who drank the most green tea 5 or more cups per day were significantly less likely to die during the study period (
- Death of all causes: 23% lower in women, 12% lower in men
- Death from heart disease: 31% lower in women, 22% lower in men
- Death from stroke: 42% lower in women, 35% lower in men
Another study involving 14,001 older Japanese individuals found that those who drank the most green tea were 76% less likely to die during the 6-year study period .

Green tea has been shown to improve blood flow and lower cholesterol. A 2013 review of many studies found green tea helped prevent a range of heart-related issues, from high blood pressure to congestive heart failure.

In one Swiss study, MRIs revealed that people who drank green tea had greater activity in the working-memory area of their brains. Alison Hornby, a dietitian and BDA spokesperson, says the evidence about green tea’s health benefits is inconclusive.
She says: “In the Far East, green tea has been used as a treatment for a variety of conditions ranging from arthritis to weight loss, as well as a preventative measure for diseases such as cancer, although the evidence for the majority of these conditions is weak or lacking.
“However, as a social drink, it appears to be safe in moderate amounts, so lovers of green tea can continue to enjoy it.”
Egcg And Heart Health
There is an active compound in green tea called EGCGor epigallocatechin-3-gallate. It has been observed that EGCG has an effect on a protein called apolipoprotein A-1.
This protein sticks to the fatty buildup in arteries when an individual suffers from atherosclerosis. Thereby, worsening the condition.
It has been found that EGCG breaks down the protein apolipoprotein A-1 and lets the blood flow properly through the arteries.
This finding is quite positive but this effect is not possible by drinking just one cup of green tea a day. More research needs to be carried out in this regard.
