Supplements, Lifestyle Change Work as Well as Cholesterol-Lowering Medications in Small Study
July 23, 2008 — Supplements of fish oil and red yeast rice, coupled with lifestyle changes in diet and exercise habits, can reduce cholesterol as much as standard cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins, according to a new study.
But the study’s lead author, David J. Becker, MD, a cardiologist at Chestnut Hill Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, emphasizes that the alternative approach is not for everyone.
“Statins remain the primary and best treatment for people with high cholesterol, especially if you have known coronary disease,” Becker tells WebMD. The study evaluated only people with high cholesterol who did not yet have coronary disease.
“If you are someone dead set against taking a statin, this may be an attractive option, assuming you are willing to make the lifestyle changes,” Becker says.
“This is one of the first studies that has shown there is some promise here,” he says, referring to the alternative approach with supplements instead of statins.
Finding alternatives to medication for lowering cholesterol is important, he says, because studies show as many as 40% of people who get a statin prescription are believed to take it for less than a year.
Plant Foods Which Contain Omega 3s
A number of plant foods are high in the omega 3 fat, ALA. Try to eat more of these, especially if you dont normally eat fish or if you are vegetarian.
The plant foods which are good sources of omega 3s are:
- some oils including flax , walnut, soya,pumpkin and algal oil
- green leafy vegetables
- seeds, especially flax , pumpkin, chia and hemp seeds.

Can I Use Vitamins To Lower My Cholesterol
The only vitamin that really lowers cholesterol is red yeast rice at 1200 mg twice a day, according to Dr. Cho.
The problem with red yeast rice is that it contains the same chemical compound as lovastatin, which means you would need to have your liver function monitored if you take it, she says. The Food and Drug Administration hasnt approved this supplement for medical use, so talk to your doctor before considering it.
All in all, you can lower your cholesterol naturally. Diet should be the cornerstone of therapy and pills are a supplement, not a substitute, for a good diet. Always talk to your doctor before taking any new supplements.
Increase Your Consumption Of Dietary Fiber
Ideally, you should be getting 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day, says Dr. Cho. Fiber binds to cholesterol and eliminates it from your body.
To increase your fiber intake, eat more whole grains, legumes like beans and lentils, vegetables and fruits. You should be getting a good mix of both soluble fibers, which are more beneficial for cholesterol, and insoluble fibers, which are better for your gut health.
Lower cholesterol isnt the only benefit of getting enough fiber. Other benefits include reducing your risk of diseases, preventing constipation and keeping you full longer.

Omega 3 Supplements Could Lower Cholesterol Flags Us Study
22 Dec 2020 — Omega 3 supplements do not raise cholesterol, according to US researchers. The findings dispel suggestions from a number of previous studies that show bad cholesterol could increase upon consumption of fish oil and other omega 3 sources.
Omega 3 fatty acids have a long history of being heart-healthy and are well-known for lowering triglycerides blood levels but typically not cholesterol.
Previous studies, however, have raised concerns over docosahexaenoic acid commonly found in fish oil supplements and the possibility that it might actually raise levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol , the bad cholesterol.
DHA could lower cholesterolTo investigate this connection, researchers extracted data from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study , which has collected medical records from 116,000 individuals over 21 years.
The investigators utilized data from over 9,200 healthy men and women who had had at least two preventive medical examinations at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, over ten years.
These examinations routinely included both blood cholesterol testing and the omega 3 index , EPA and DHA levels).
Researchers found that omega 3 supplements could lower cholesterol levels.Regarding participants fish oil intake, the researchers found that these supplements did not raise LDL-C levels.
The study was conducted by the Cooper Institute and the Fatty Acid Research Institute and published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.

Becker sees downsides to supplements over statins.
“The red yeast rice is an unregulated supplement,” Becker says. He cites a recent report in which researchers found significant differences in the amount of red yeast rice in different brands of supplements.
In August 2007, the FDA warned against buying or eating specific red yeast rice products because they ”may contain an unauthorized drug that could be harmful.” FDA testing had detected lovastatin, the active ingredient in Mevacor, a prescription drug for cholesterol lowering.
Red yeast rice sold in the U.S. typically comes in 600 milligram to 1,200 milligram doses, with recommendations of taking no more than 2,400 milligrams a day, the lower dose used in the study. Doses higher than this increase the risk of side effects similar to that of statin drugs, including muscle pain or tenderness, and possibly liver damage. Red yeast rice and statins work similarly in the body, so they should not be taken together, as this increases the chance of side effects.
For anyone who wants to try the alternative approach, Becker recommends talking with their doctor, having all recommended blood tests to make sure the approach is working, and checking for potential side effects.

If dietary changes are part of your overall plan to lower your LDL cholesterol levels, fish is a good option. While all fish contain some cholesterol, many are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential dietary fats that can actually help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels by lowering your triglyceride levels. They can also help increase your HDL levels.
Your body cant make essential omega-3 fatty acids, so you have to get them from the food you eat. Omega-3s are important for a variety of body and brain functions and are even thought to affect mood and pain. Salmon, trout, and tuna, as well as walnuts and flaxseed, are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
In addition, most fish are low in saturated and trans fats, and many contain no trans fats at all.

Taking Fish Oil Supplements Is As Good For You As Eating Fish
Fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, as well as fish oil capsules all have heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
But adding fish to your diet has bonuses you won’t get from a supplement: calcium and vitamins B2 and D. It’s also an excellent source of protein.
So try to eat fish more often. Have it two times a week instead of meat.

If You Already Have Heart Disease Fish Oil Won’t Help
Fish oil supplements seem to help prevent more troubles for people with heart disease. Heart patients should get about 1 gram of EPA and DHA combined, preferably from fish, every day. Supplements may also help, but check with your doctor.
If you take aspirin, warfarin, or other drugs for heart patients, know that fish oil can thin the blood. At high doses, it might thin it too much.
