Heart Attacks On The Rise In Younger Women Study Finds

Chicken vs Beef and Cholesterol, Which is Better?

Researchers said that the findings may not affect most people who arenât at high risk for heart disease. When participantsâ diets were low in saturated fat, the rise in LDL was minimal regardless of whether they ate chicken or lean red meat. But for the person actively trying to bring down high levels of LDL cholesterol, researchers said, it may be worth cutting back on both red and white meats, and relying more on plant proteins.

Red meat is a source of high-quality protein, zinc, iron and vitamin B12, but most nutritionists agree that it is best to choose a lean cut in a modest portion for optimal health benefits. The positives of having red or white meat can be canceled out if too much saturated fat, from any source, is included in ones diet.

Previous evidence shows that fatty red meat is a prime source of artery-clogging saturated fat, a factor associated with heart disease. And two studies published last year showed that people who eat red meat but not vegetarians or people who eat only white meat such as chicken have higher levels in the blood of a chemical called TMAO, which has been linked to higher heart disease risk.

The researchers cautioned against demonizing any food based on one study. âPeople often get the impression that if something raises cholesterol, it should be eliminated,â Krauss said. âI donât want people to get too focused on an all or nothing approach.â

The Effect Of White Meat On Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a type of lipid called a sterol made by the liver and present in every cell in an animals body, including human animals. It is found only in foods of animal origin white meat, fish, eggs, and every other meat and dairy product. Foods from plants all types of fruits and vegetables, pulses, wholegrains, nuts and seeds are cholesterol-free.

Our livers make all the cholesterol we need approximately 1,000 milligrams per day and it is used in the manufacture of hormones and cell membranes and in other parts of the body. It follows that we have no need for cholesterol in our diet at all.

Cholesterol cant be avoided by choosing lean cuts of meat as its mainly found in the lean parts. Neither is white meat lower in cholesterol than red meat as chicken contains as much cholesterol as beef. One small, grilled, skinless chicken breast contains around 100 milligrams of cholesterol an amount that can add roughly 0.13 mmol/L to your cholesterol level!

Animal products also contain saturated fat which causes our livers to manufacture even more cholesterol. Unsaturated fats dont have this effect.

Despite a welter of evidence that a vegetarian diet is the best way to avoid high cholesterol levels and the diseases which go with them, official advice, amazingly, is not to go vegetarian.

But to switch to a lower fat diet avoiding fatty cuts of red meat, eating white meat and fish and ditching butter for margarine.

Cholesterol Control: Chicken Vs Beef

Chicken and beef are both staples of many diet, and they can be prepared and seasoned in thousands of different ways.

Unfortunately, these common animal proteins are also sources of the type of fat that can elevate your risk for high cholesterol, heart disease, and cardiovascular problems.

LDL cholesterol contributes to plaque that can clog and narrow your arteries, which can break off as clots. This narrowing and these clots can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Since your body produces all of the LDL cholesterol it needs, eating foods that are high in saturated fats, like fatty meats, can increase the amount of LDL cholesterol that your body makes.

But that in no way means fried chicken with the skin on is a better choice than a grilled sirloin steak at least if youre talking about heart health.

Strong Bones And Muscles

Chicken is a good source of amino acids because of its lean protein. Amino acids help our bodies develop muscular tissue, which is especially important as we get older. Higher protein consumption has also been demonstrated to help preserve bone mineral density in studies. Chicken consumption can assist in creating more substantial muscles and promote healthier bones, reducing the incidence of injuries and disorders like osteoporosis.

Cooking At Home: How to clean a Chicken Breast

Here are a few tips to make the juiciest, tastiest chicken breast:

Cut into the chicken to create a pocket. You will later rub oil and seasonings into this pocket to marinate the chicken.

Make a diagonal incision when you cut into the chicken. This will create a downward slope inside the chicken.

When the chicken cooks and releases its juices, they will be drawn down the slope, helping to keep it moist.

Brush or rub oil on the chicken to keep it juicy.

for at least 5 minutes. If youre busy, let it marinate ahead of time in the fridge for up to 2 hours.

Cover the chicken. You can wrap the whole baking tray tightly in aluminum foil and put it in to bake.

As mentioned, we also put lemon slices on top of the chicken breasts for an extra layer of covering.

Air Fryer Chicken Breasts With Vegetables

This is a great recipe to make with vegetables. I love combining this recipe with my air fryer asparagus recipe. Because the two recipes have different cooking times, just add the vegetables once the chicken has been cooking for a little while.

For example, if my chicken needs 15 minutes to cook, I will add the asparagus after about 7 minutes, as it only needs 8 minutes to cook. Pause the air fryer in the middle of cooking, remove the partially cooked chicken, add the asparagus, and then put the chicken back in on top of the vegetables. Continue cooking and when everything is done the vegetables will be both cooked and seasoned from the chicken.

Focusing On Saturated Fat

While the DGAC found no significant link between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol levels, saturated fat is a concern. The amount of saturated fat you eat is linked to an increased risk for heart disease. The DHHS recommends keeping your saturated fat intake to less than 10 percent of your total calories. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats reduces your risk for heart disease.

The amount of saturated fat in chicken and pork depends on the cut. In general, lean cuts are much lower in saturated fat. A 3-ounce serving of chicken breast or pork tenderloin contain only about 1 gram of saturated fat each.

Dietary Cholesterol Recommendations Update

Every five years the DHHS along with the Department of Agriculture, releases updated recommendations on what you should eat to stay healthy. These guidelines are based on a nutrition report by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

The biggest change is that the DGAC revised its cholesterol recommendation. After reviewing the latest research, the DGAC no longer finds it necessary to limit your cholesterol intake to 300 milligrams per day, though moderation is still encouraged. The change comes after finding a lack of connection between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol.

The committee also found that the typical American isnt eating too much cholesterol anyway, averaging an intake of 270 milligrams per day. So, the cholesterol in your diet isnt deemed a major concern.

Cholesterol And Your Health

Cholesterol comes from two sources: The foods that you eat and your body, which produces it. Your liver and intestines produce cholesterol because your body needs it for various essential functions. According to the American Heart Association and Harvard Health Publishing, cholesterol is important because it can help:

  • Buildcells.
  • Makehormones, like testosterone and estrogen.
  • Makefat-dissolving bile acids, which are important for digestion.

About 80 percent of the cholesterol in your body is produced by your liver and intestines. The remaining 20 percent comes from animal products, like eggs, meat , shellfish, cheese and other high-fat dairy products you consume.

As a fat, cholesterol can’t move through your body on its own. It’s bound to lipoproteins in order to do so, which is why you’ll often hear cholesterol referred to as LDL and HDL . It’s the levels of LDL and HDL that determine if there are issues regarding cholesterol and your health.

HDL cholesterol is called the good cholesterol, while LDL cholesterol is called bad cholesterol. Too much LDL cholesterol or low levels of HDL cholesterol can affect your health. Both of these issues can cause cholesterol to build up in your body, affecting your heart and brain.

A 3-ounce serving of roasted chicken breast meat without skin has 140 calories, 26 grams of protein, 70 milligrams of cholesterol and 5 grams of fat, including 1 gram of saturated fat. How Many Calories In A Chicken Tenderloin

Tales From The Dark Side: Why Dark Meat Chicken Is Healthier

How many calories in a chicken tenderloin depends on how it has been prepared and cooked. Raw chicken tenders have around 75 to 110 calories each, depending on the size and fat quantity.

Chicken tenderloins are typically lean and therefore dont have much fat content. A 3-ounce tenderloin has around 100 calories and 2 grams of fat.

However, cooking tenderloins with breadcrumbs will make them more calorific. For example, the same 3-ounce tender with breadcrumbs will contain around 143 calories rather than 100.

Spices are much better to use than breadcrumbs as they add a lot of flavor without the calories. In fact, herbs and spices often have fewer than 5 calories per teaspoon.

The more oil you use, the more calories your chicken tenderloins will be as well. Oil is fat, no matter what type you use. Many people eyeball how much oil they use which might be adding more calories than necessary.

One teaspoon of olive oil has 119 calories included, meaning that three teaspoons can amount to the same amount of calories as a full meal. Make sure to measure out the oil that youre using to prevent adding too many calories to your chicken tenderloins.
