LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25, 2018 Combining medication that lowers blood pressure with medication that lowers cholesterol reduced first-time strokes by 44 percent, according to research presented at the American Stroke Associations International Stroke Conference 2018, a world premier meeting dedicated to the science and treatment of cerebrovascular disease for researchers and clinicians.

Seventy-five percent of strokes are first-time strokes. High blood pressure and high cholesterol both increase the risk for stroke, the fifth leading cause of death in America. Yet, its not known whether combining drugs that lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels can protect individuals from stroke.

Now, a study involving 12,705 participants from 21 countries shows that individually, drugs that lower blood pressure or cholesterol do indeed reduce stroke risk, but when combined, they offer even greater protection.

When To See Your Doctor

Check in with your doctor whenever you have concerns about your general health. If you have any of the risk factors for high cholesterol, a quick blood test can reveal a lot and allow your doctor to take action. Sometimes lifestyles changes are enough to whip your numbers back into shape. Your doctor can also prescribe statin drugs to lower your cholesterol if necessary.

Trouble sleeping is another issue you may want to bring to your healthcare providers attention. Even an additional hour of sleep each night can shift your numbers, so try to head to bed a bit earlier tonight. Relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation are great for unwinding before bedtime. If these home methods dont help, your doctor can point you in the right direction or possibly prescribe medication.

Bedtime May Be Best Time For Blood Pressure Meds

HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 23, 2019 — Taking blood pressure medications at bedtime rather than in the morning nearly halves the risk of dying from a heart attack, stroke or heart failure, a large, new study finds.

Researchers in Spain followed more than 19,000 adults with high blood pressure. They found that people who took all their blood pressure meds at night had lower blood pressure around the clock compared to volunteers who took their medication in the morning.

“The findings are highly consistent regardless of sex, age, presence of diabetes or kidney disease, and other major known factors of increased risk,” said study lead author Ramon Hermida.

Hermida is director of bioengineering and chronobiology at the University of Vigo’s Atlantic Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies.

“Conventionally, most patients ingest their medication in the morning,” said Hermida, “although no single trial ever documented this to be preferable.” No guidelines are currently in place regarding the best time to take the drugs, he added.

A New York City heart doctor believes consistency in taking your blood pressure pills will deliver optimal protection.

“The key here is routines,” said Dr. Satjit Bhusri, a cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital. “Not missing a dose. We know one thing worse than an elevated blood pressure is swings in blood pressure due to periodic non-compliance.”

To achieve compliance, it’s important to stick to a routine, Bhusri said.

Who Is At Risk For High Ldl Cholesterol

TheAmerican Heart Association recommends that every adult over age 20 get screened regularly for high cholesterol. You can have this blood test done as part of your yearly physical. You may want to pay special attention to your levels if you have high blood pressure, are over 45 or 50 , smoke, or have a family history of high cholesterol.

You may also be at risk if your diet is poor, youre relatively sedentary , or youre under a great deal of stress. Scientists are now also exploring the link between sleep and high cholesterol.

Sleep , researchers discovered that both too much and too little sleep have a negative impact on lipid levels. They examined a group of 1,666 men and 2,329 women over age 20. Sleeping less than five hours at night raised the risk of high triglycerides and low HDL levels in women. Getting more than eight hours of sleep produced a similar result. Men were not as sensitive to oversleeping as women.

Too little sleep also leads to high levels of LDL cholesterol, according to a study published by the . Individuals who slept less than six hours each night greatly increased their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In addition, the researchers uncovered that snoring is associated with lower levels of the good HDL cholesterol.

Can I Take My Cholesterol Medication In The Morning Instead Of At Night

Dr. Brown answers the question: ‘Cholesterol Medication At Night/Morning?’

Heart Disease And The Causes?

Question: I have been told to take my cholesterol medication at night. Can I take it together with my other medications in the morning, instead?

Answer: So, your doctor says you must take these cholesterol medicines at night. Now, that’s — must be some reason for that. Why would the doctor say that if it wasn’t necessary? And the answer is that the body makes when there’s none in your stomach, and so, if you’ve just eaten, the liver, the main organ that makes cholesterol, takes a rest and absorbs cholesterol from the dietary source.

But once you’ve stopped eating for awhile, then the liver turns back on and starts doing its job to maintain levels of cholesterol in the blood. So, taking that pill at night actually times it with the onset of the liver’s activity. The liver goes to work while you’re , and what the do is slow down the liver and reduce the amount of cholesterol that the liver makes, and that ultimately reduces the amount of cholesterol in your circulation in your bloodstream.

What Should I Do If I Take A Cholesterol Medication

If you decide to take cholesterol medication, your doctor might recommend periodic liver function tests to monitor the medications effect on your liver. However, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration no longer recommends routine monitoring for statin users. Remember the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.

Statins That You Should Take At Night

Some statins have half-lives of less than six hours. These statins are best taken at night.

Simvastatin is an example of a statin that works better if taken in the evening. Studies show that when simvastatin is taken at night, theres a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol than when its taken in the morning.

Lovastatin should be taken with dinner. However, the extended-release version of lovastatin, Altoprev, should be taken at bedtime.

Fluvastatin has a half-life of about three hours, so it should also be taken at night.

Studies show that some of the newer statins can be just as effective when taken in the morning. HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors such as atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are more potent than older statins. They have half-lives of at least 14 hours.

Extended-release fluvastatin, or Lescol XL, can be taken at any time of day.

Best At Night: Rheumatoid Arthritis Meds

The problem with taking a steroid-based pain reliever like prednisone when you wake up is that most arthritis sufferers experience joint stiffness and pain in the morning. If you take your medication at nightideally, a low-dose, delayed-release formula that takes effect around 3 can curb the inflammation that happens while youre sleeping and ease those morning symptoms. Thats what Italian researchers found: They say this timing takes the bodys circadian rhythms into account and can help tamp down inflammatory substances like cortisol and cytokine that can peak during the night. Other research suggests taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as Motrin and Aleve at night may also reduce pain symptoms before they really kick in.

Should You Take Your Pills With Milk

Milk and dairy products in general are a bad idea with tetracycline-type antibiotics. The calcium can diminish absorption of the antibiotics into the blood stream and reduce effectiveness.

Milk is also a bad choice if you use bisacodyl laxatives . Thats because such drugs may not dissolve correctly if you create an alkaline environment in your stomach. The presence of the laxative in the stomach without the protective enteric coating may cause gastritis.

Diet alone is often not enough. It should be combined with exercise, says Michos. When it comes to exercise, the equation is pretty simple: Being sedentary equals lower levels of HDL, according to the AHA. You can lower both cholesterol and high blood pressure by doing at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as walking, bicycling, swimming, or even doing yard work, each week.

Even more good news: A review published in November 2018 in the journal BioMed Research International found that both low- and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise led to a significant reduction in total cholesterol, including LDL.

How Statin Drugs Protect The Heart

More than 200 million people around the world take statin drugs for theirheart health. Shifting ideas about the risks and benefits of statins overthe years, however, have left some new patients confused about whetherthese drugs are rightor safefor them.

Traditionally, statins were viewed as purely cholesterol-lowering drugs. So it made sense just to use them for people with high cholesterol, explains Johns Hopkins cardiologist Michael Blaha, M.D.But weve learned that they also benefit people with lower levels of cholesterol who are at a high risk of heart disease. So we now think of statins as risk-reducing drugs.

This dramatic change in thinking means that people who once were not candidates for statins are now prescribed them to lower their risk of heart attack and stroke.

Taking Blood Pressure Medication And Statin For Cholesterol Slashed Risk For Some Patients

CHICAGO A few years after new guidelines recommended that several million more Americans take a cholesterol-lowering drug to reduce their risk of having a heart attack or stroke, an extensive international investigation has come to a similar conclusion.

The study known as HOPE-3 sought to find the best way to prevent cardiovascular disease in people who were considered at an intermediate risk. Researchers pursued this from four angles: giving medicines to lower blood pressure giving a cholesterol-lowering drug known as a statin giving a combination of all those medicines and doing nothing.

The biggest benefits came from the statin. This echoes the 2013 guidelines for doctors published by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, which are considered the standard for treatment in the United States.

The investigation is likely to give doctors more reason to prescribe statins for patients who fall within the new risk category.

When the guidelines were originally published in November 2013, controversy followed. Much of the backlash was over lowering the bar for recommending who should be prescribed a statin, which in turn drastically increased the number of people encouraged to take the pill.

Everybody is beginning to see that what was considered very disruptive when we published it happens to be right, said Sidney Smith, M.D., one of the 20 experts who wrote the 2013 guidelines.

Dr Pradip Shah Tells You Why You Shouldn’t Miss Your Cholesterol Medicines

Popping pills can be tedious especially if you have to do it every day. Many of us are caught up our busy schedules, and some of us are just plain lazy to follow a rigorous schedule as far as taking medicines is concerned. Despite doctors stressing upon the importance of not skipping doses and stopping treatment midway, especially while treating lifestyle diseases like blood pressure and diabetes, many still miss their meds on a routine basis. We know that the cornerstone of treating any disease successfully is regularity and consistency.

High blood cholesterol is one such lifestyle disease for which medicines are to be taken every day without fail. When the levels of cholesterol in the body increase, there is a threat of clots forming in the blood. This, in turn, can cause hypertension, angina, strokes and heart attacks.

While its good to know what your so-called bad LDL cholesterol number is, that doesnt give you the complete picture, and numbers alone do not tell the story. Doctors order a blood test to look at your lipid panel, which consists of your high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and total blood cholesterol .

To evaluate your risk for cardiovascular disease, doctors will also consider other risk factors, such as your age, family history, and whether you have other health conditions related to heart disease, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association .
