The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed the effects of red meat, white meat and plant-based protein sources on cholesterol levels. Healthy adults between the ages of 21 and 65 were assigned to groups in which they were allowed to red meat, white meat and plant-based protein, each for a four-week period. The order of the proteins was random for each group. The results surprised the researchers, they said in a press release.

When we planned this study, we expected red meat to have a more adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels than white meat, but we were surprised that this was not the casetheir effects on cholesterol are identical when saturated fat levels are equivalent, said Ronald Krauss, MD, study author and director of atherosclerosis research at the Childrens Hospital Oakland Research Institute.

Is Eating White Meat Like Chicken Bad For Cholesterol Levels

A 2019 study that made media headlines found that lean white meat had the same effect on cholesterol levels as lean red meat. Because of how the study was designed, it was difficult to know if the results were caused by the meat or the other food items in the sample menu fed to study participants that contained high amounts of saturated fats.

The study also had a small sample size and was done over a brief period so the results might not be the same with more people studied over a longer period.

Researchers in the study measured blood cholesterol levels, not actual incidents of heart issues or the development of heart disease. Blood cholesterol levels are markers of potential risk, but not evidence of cause-and-effect. The results of this study also do not hold up when looking at the larger body of evidence on white meat that assessed health associations of poultry versus associations with health markers.

  • No link found between white meat consumption or overall meat consumption and higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
  • White meat was associated with a 13% decrease in risk of stroke.
  • Poultry intake is not associated with total stroke risk.

Benefits And Dangers Of Oysters

In addition to protein and omega-3s, oysters provide a variety of nutrients your body needs to function properly. Vitamin B12 and minerals like phosphorus, potassium, zinc and magnesium are just a few to mention.

The downside is that oysters are typically served raw or fried. Eating them raw comes with the risk of food poisoning. A type of bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus is often the cause of serious oyster-related illnesses.

If you have a compromised immune system from something like cancer, HIV/AIDS or pre-existing illnesses, you’re considered “high-risk” and should cook oysters before eating.

How you cook oysters matters too. Deep-fried oysters, as well as those cooked in butter, are much higher in fat than steamed or boiled varieties. Frying oysters will increase the amount of fat, including saturated fat.

Even if eating high-cholesterol foods won’t negatively impact your health, fat from unhealthy cooking methods can. As with all things, moderation is key.

Many Americans think of boneless, skinless chicken breast as a heart-healthy recipe ingredient. But are there dangers lurking in this popular protein?

With the recent emphasis on monitoring cholesterol intake for heart health, an increasing number of consumers are examining the amount of cholesterol in the foods that they eat.

Many are surprised and disappointed to find that boneless, skinless chicken breast has a high amount of cholesterol 65 mg in each 4 ounce serving.

Dr. Mitchell Hecht, Medical Columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports that 300 mg or less of cholesterol should be consumed each day to maintain a healthy heart.

So, why have consumers been told that boneless, skinless chicken breast is healthy?

The amount of cholesterol in food is not what raises blood cholesterol. According to Dr. Hecht, the real culprits are trans fat and saturated fat.

Even though boneless, skinless chicken breast contains a relatively high amount of cholesterol, it is low in fat. As such, it is still a healthy source of protein.

In an article for , Dr. Ed Bauman and Marsha McLaughlin, N.C. report that chicken is an excellent choice for heart-health compared to red meat. Eaten without the skin, chicken contains 5% fat whereas red meat contains 30-40% fat.

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are still an excellent protein for a heart-healthy menu.

TUESDAY, June 4, 2019 — Flying in the face of popular belief, new research suggests both red meat and white meat can drive up your cholesterol levels.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute , part of the University of California, San Francisco. The analysis is reportedly the first to comprehensively compare the impact that red and white meat have on cholesterol.

Red meat, such as beef and lamb, has become unpopular in recent years because of its association with heart disease, and government nutrition guidelines have encouraged consumers to eat poultry as a healthier alternative, the researchers noted.

“When we planned this study, we expected red meat to have a more adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels than white meat, but we were surprised that this was not the case,” said study senior author Dr. Ronald Krauss. “Their effects on cholesterol are identical when saturated fat levels are equivalent.”

Krauss is senior scientist and director of atherosclerosis research at CHORI.

After tracking how red meat, white meat and plant protein all impacted cholesterol levels, Krauss and his team determined that both red and white meat prompted higher blood cholesterol levels than diets containing an equivalent amount of plant protein.

The findings were published June 4 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

How To Eat Cheese And Watch Your Cholesterol

You can eat cheese and still maintain healthy cholesterol levels. One study reported that cheese intake, compared with the same amount of fat from butter, didnt increase LDL. While you may not want to eat tons of cheese, theres no reason you need to totally cut it out of your diet.

Here are some tips to remember when selecting and eating cheese:

  • Watch portion sizes. Many cheeses suggest a one-ounce serving. Since cheese often comes in block form, portioning can be difficult. Cheese sticks that come pre-portioned take the guesswork out of the equation. If your favorite cheese doesnt come in a single serving size, one ounce of cheese is about the same size as three stacked dice. You may also want to purchase a food scale so that you can easily measure out portions.
  • Savor it. If you go for a full-fat cheese, choose a small portion and savor every bite to get the most satisfaction out of a smaller quantity.
  • What about cream cheese? Opt for ricotta or goat cheese, which are both higher in protein, or sub it for avocado. You may also try blending 4 tablespoons of softened non-hydrogenated margarine with a cup of low-fat cottage cheese to make a tasty substitute spread.
  • Write it down. If youre having trouble tracking your saturated fat intake for the day, consider using a nutrition tracking app such as MyFitnessPal or Loseit! A simple pen and paper approach can also work.
