Alcohol is a fixture in our society many people consume at least a small amount almost every day. Although many studies do not attribute any good properties to alcohol in any quantities, the positive effect of moderate amounts of alcohol on the cardiovascular system cannot be denied. According to long-term studies at the University of Tampere in Finland, alcohol in small amounts leads to a reduction in LDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL cholesterol. In contrast to HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol is the bad variety! So should one drink alcohol to balance the level of cholesterol? This question is easy to answer: No. In larger quantities the risks outweigh the benefits. The increase in HDL cholesterol and the associated benefits are also rather marginal. Some of the fat we eat comes from the cooking oils we use when frying. Try these simple tricks to help you eat less fat.

  • Instead of frying foods, steam, boil, poach, grill, bake, microwave, barbecue or stir-fry them.
  • Use only a small amount of oil, and choose oils high in polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat.
  • Try cooking with water or tomato juice.
  • Measure oil using a teaspoon or tablespoon rather than pouring it straight into the saucepan, or use an oil spray.

  • When you grill or roast meat, use a trivet which allows the fat to drain off. Replace fatty ingredients with healthier alternatives, for example, use low-fat yoghurt or fromage frais in recipes that call for cream.

Among its benefits, HDL cholesterol absorbs excess cholesterol in the blood and carries it back to the liver where it is flushed out of the body. Increases in HDL generally correspond to decreases in the risk of heart disease and stroke.

A 2020 study in the Journal of Nutrition reported that while high consumption of unfiltered espresso did, in fact, increase TC and LDL levels in both men and women, it also increased HDL and decreased triglyceride levels. Decreased triglycerides are linked to a lower risk of heart disease.

The same study also noted that regular consumption of tea and instant coffee had no detrimental effect on a person’s blood lipid profile.

What Kind Of Coffee Should I Be Drinking If I Have High Cholesterol

If you are worried about your cholesterol then the best coffee to drink is regular old filtered coffee . Generally, you would want to stay away from espresso drinks or French press coffee. There are a few things to consider though. If you are a light coffee drinker, maybe 1-2 cups per day, one would assume that the effects of boiled, unfiltered coffee would be less than the 4-6 cups that were imbibed in the coffee study above. Another thing to consider is what other things are you doing to increase or decrease your cholesterol.

Black Coffee Or Cream And Sugar

Almost all of these studies looked at coffee drinking without regard to whether the coffee was consumed with cream, sugar, other ingredientsor just black. This makes sense because whether you drink your coffee black or not, odds are that you often consume it with other foods. And it really doesnt make any difference to your digestive system whether the other foods are mixed into the coffee itself, or consumed separately with a fork or spoon. Only one of your numbers needs to be higher than it should be to be diagnosed with high blood pressure, and only one needs to be lower than it should be to be diagnosed with low blood pressure.

Cafestol, a compound found in coffee, elevates cholesterol by hijacking a receptor in an intestinal pathway critical to its regulation, said researchers from Baylor College of Medicine in a report that appears in the July issue of the journal Molecular Endocrinology.

In fact, cafestol is the most potent dietary cholesterol-elevating agent known, said Dr. David Moore, professor of molecular and cellular biology at BCM, and Dr. Marie-Louise Ricketts, a postdoctoral student and first author of the report. Cafetiere, or French press coffee, boiled Scandinavian brew and espresso contain the highest levels of the compound, which is removed by paper filters used in most other brewing processes. Removing caffeine does not remove cafestol, however.

Studies by a co-author Dr. Martijn B. Katan of Vriye Univeriteit Amsterdam, Institute for Health Sciences, The Netherlands indicate that consuming five cups of French press coffee per day for four weeks raises cholesterol in the blood 6 to 8 percent.

It is part of the bodys own way of regulating levels of cholesterol, said Ricketts.

Among them:

  • The high caffeine content can overstimulate the central nervous system, triggering anxiety, restlessness, headaches, insomnia, and heart palpitations. Poor sleep causes daytime sleepiness and reduced alertness and mental performance.
  • Coffee is acidic and can promote stomach upset in some people, particularly those with chronic gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome . It can also speed up gastric emptying and can make diarrhea worse in people with IBS or inflammatory bowel disease .
  • High consumption of coffee in females increases the risk of bone fractures by 150%. The same is not seen in males.
  • High consumption of coffee during pregnancy may also increase the risk of low birth weight, preterm birth, and pregnancy loss compared to low to moderate consumption.
