Cholesterol is a sneaky condition because it discreetly raises a persons risk of heart disease, an umbrella term for conditions that narrow or block blood vessels. Specifically, LDL also known as the bad cholesterol performs this deadly function. It does this by causing the build-up of fatty deposits within your arteries, thereby reducing or blocking the flow of blood and oxygen your heart needs. If your arteries become fully blocked, you could have a heart attack. Fortunately, there are ways to naturally lower your cholesterol. By consuming more omega-3 fatty acids and whey protein, your cholesterol could return to a healthy number. How?

How Safe Are Whey Protein Supplements

Are you aware of the serious side effects of whey protein supplements? It has been established that the amount of whey protein supplements you consume has a direct influence on whether you gain from its benefits or not. Over-consumption of this protein is the reason many people suffer from adverse effects. In fact, excessive consumption of any protein is bad for the body as it gets stored in the body in the form of fat. This in turn increases the risk of dehydration.

There is also the chance that whey protein may have an interaction with certain medications. For example, it has been found that supplements made with this protein can reduce the effectiveness of Levodopa, which is a drug used for Parkinsons disease. Whey protein supplements may also lower the effectiveness of Alendronate, the drug prescribed to patients with osteoporosis. It may lower the bodys ability to absorb the drug, thereby making it less effective. It may also have an adverse effect on the effectiveness of the antibiotics Tetracycline and Quinolone. It should also be noted that diabetic patients may experience blood sugar changes when they consume protein supplements.

Drink Alcohol Only In Moderation

Moderate use of alcohol has been linked with higher levels of HDL cholesterol but the benefits arent strong enough to recommend alcohol for anyone who doesnt already drink. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger.

Too much alcohol can lead to serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke.

Get The Most From Your Protein Powder

Here are a few things to consider:

  • To recover after exercise, an athlete or avid exerciser should consume protein within 60 minutes of a workout. Thats when your muscles are most responsive to the use of protein for the repair and growth process.
  • To control your weight, its best to consume a steady supply of protein at each meal and snack to help keep you full.

Although theres no magic number for how much protein toconsume at one time, its best to aim for at least 3 ounces or 20 grams ofprotein per meal.

Are There Downside To Taking More Protein

People tend to focus only on the benefits of a higher protein intake, especially when it might improve blood pressure.

But there are some downsides if you start taking large volumes of protein through your food and supplements.

One issue you might encounter if you start taking very strong protein shakes with more than 40 grams of protein is that you feel bloated and even get some stomach cramps .

Very high levels of taking a dietary protein supplement have also been linked to higher risk factors of kidney stones .

So, don’t just focus on the blood cholesterol and heart disease benefits, but weigh things up against all risk factors.

Comparison Of The Present Results With Those In The Literature

Recent meta-analyses of RCTs focused on the effects of high-protein diets on biomarkers of obesity. Santesso et al. found that higher protein intakes significantly decrease TG and increased HDL-C. However, the effect on HDL-C disappeared after restricting studies with lower risk of bias. In our previous meta-analysis of 9 trials among obese type 2 diabetes, high-protein diets borderline significantly reduced TG by 0.17mmol/l . Thus, not only protein type but also the protein amount are critical factors affecting the beneficial effects of whey protein supplementation on the TG level.

Whey Protein To Keep Cholesterol In Check

What do you think about protein shakes? Im not talking about plant-based protein shakes, either. Im talking about whey protein. The stuff bodybuilders guzzle after a workout.

Useless to you, right? Wrong. Whey protein could help lower cholesterol.

Whey is one of the proteins found in dairy products. As a supplement, it is a by-product of cheesemaking and is also separated from milk. It is a complete protein, meaning it features all nine amino acids. It is also very easy to digest because it is low in lactose.

Research has shown that taking a whey protein supplement each day can lead to lower cholesterol.

One study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that overweight men and women had much to gain from taking whey. Following a 12-week study period, researchers found that subjects displayed significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

Aside from wheys apparent benefits for cholesterol levels, there is also data to suggest it can lower blood pressure, as well as heart disease and stroke risk. These benefits are closely associated with cholesterol levels. LDL arterial deposits are a known contributor to high blood pressure.

Dont be scared off by the idea of when protein. Its not just for bodybuilders, but has benefits for everyone! It might help you manage cholesterol, blood pressure, and reduce your risk for heart disease.

Whey Protein Can Inhibit Cholesterol Synthesis In Rats

One comparative study from 1993 on female rats was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary whey protein v. casein on plasma and liver cholesterol concentrations. One high and one low dietary protein level were fed for 3 weeks periods to those rats.

Results were somehow promising. At the low dietary protein level, whey protein v. casein did not affect plasma total cholesterol, but lowered the concentration of liver cholesterol. At the high dietary protein level, whey protein significantly lowered plasma and liver cholesterol and also plasma triacylglycerols. The hypocholesterolaemic effect of whey protein was associated with a decrease in very-low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol.

Will Whey Protein Make Me Gain Weight

Cellucor Whey Protein Isolate & Concentrate Blend Powder with BCAAs ...

You need to be in a calorie surplus to gain weight. That means if the whey protein you consume causes your total daily calorie intake to be more than youre burning, you will gain weight over time.

However, excess calories from any food will cause weight gain.

Its common for people who want to build muscle mass to use whey protein as part of their calorie surplus to intentionally gain weight.

Building muscle means youre adding mass, which requires more calories and protein.

But depending on the amount of whey protein youre consuming, it can also help you lose weight, as long as you operate on an overall calorie deficit.

Protein shakes and smoothies are relatively low in calories compared to regular snacks, but they also increase the sense of satiety.

When Should One Take Whey Protein

This is a question that is often asked by many people who are interested in consuming whey protein but do not know how to go about it properly. It is not tough to learn when to take this protein to reap its benefits.

Firstly, if you want to take whey protein on its own, you should do it within half an hour to an hour after a workout that is based on strength training. This is because this protein gets digested very quickly. During other times, you should eat it with other foods so that digestion can be slowed down. For instance, for extra protein in your breakfast without foods like eggs, you can add whey protein to your oats in powder form.

Secondly, if you want to have a healthy snack while you are in the office, you can have a whey protein-shake combined with a bit of fish oil or nuts. This again will help in slowing down the digestion process of the protein. The fat combination is what helps slow down digestion and this in turn benefits you greatly by allowing the levels of insulin in your body to stay even. It also aids in the stimulation of CCK, which is a hormone that lets your body know when it is full.

Protein that is digested after a workout gives your body the amino acids that it needs for the repairing and building of new muscles. According to experts, consuming whey protein as soon as you complete a workout could be especially beneficial as it has a rich content of Leucine, an amino acid that is easily absorbed by the body.

How Much Cholesterol Should I Have Per Day

Your daily cholesterol consumption should be fewer than 300 milligrams, according to the American Heart Association. Your cholesterol consumption should be fewer than 200 milligrams if you have heart disease or if it runs in your family. Many of the foods we eat daily, such as eggs, meat, fish, poultry, and milk, have variable quantities of cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol can boost blood cholesterol levels in the body, raising heart disease risk factors.

There are various forms of cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association, including low-density lipoprotein , high-density lipoprotein , and lipoprotein or Lp . LDL is the principal transporter of cholesterol in the bloodstream, but it may also build up in the walls of arteries that supply the heart and brain.

These compounds form a hard deposit in the arteries, blocking them and causing heart attacks, strokes, and other problems. HDL, or âgoodâ cholesterol, transports cholesterol from the arteries to the liver, where it is processed. If the Lp cholesterol level is excessively high, it can lead to the development of atherosclerosis at a young age and arterial wall lesions.

There are a number of things you may do to reduce your risk of heart disease. When eaten as part of a balanced diet, replacing saturated and trans-fatty acids with healthier fats may help decrease LDL cholesterol. Nuts and seeds, fish , and vegetable oils are all rich sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Whole Foods Vs Protein Powder

You can meet your bodys daily protein requirements whether you drink shakes or eat only whole foods. However, they dont offer equal nutrition.

What you may find surprising is that shakes generally contain fewer nutrients than whole foods. For that reason, shakes may help you lose weight, but whole foods can offer a bigger nutritional punch.

High cholesterol is when a person has too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in their blood. Too much cholesterol blocks blood vessels making it more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Having high cholesterol is mainly due to a diet of fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol. A person can lower their cholesterol by taking certain supplements and adding more whey protein to your diet could help lower your levels.

Measurement Of Plasma Lipids Insulin And Homeostasis Model Assessment

An 8·5 ml fasting blood sample was taken via venepuncture from subjects in the fasting state, at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks, to measure circulating insulin, glucose and lipids . Serum was isolated by centrifugation at 3000 rpm at 4 °C for 10 min, and was stored at 80 °C until the end of the study. Serum TAG and total cholesterol were measured using enzymatic colorimetric kits . Serum HDL cholesterol was determined after precipitation of apo B-containing lipoproteins with phosphotungstic acid and MgCl2 HDL cholesterol present in the supernatant was determined by enzymatic colorimetry . Serum LDL cholesterol was determined using a modified version of the Friedewald equation. NEFA were determined using WAKO NEFA C kit. Apo B was analysed using an ELISA kit obtained from Mabtech AB . Plasma glucose levels were measured using the Randox glucose GODPAP kit , and plasma insulin was measured using an ELISA kit . The homoeostasis model of assessment index 2 was used to assess insulin resistance from fasting glucose and insulin concentrations.

Search Strategies And Selected Outcomes

Protocol of study was registered in international prospective register of systematic reviews . In order to find and include relevant investigations published from inception until 30th April 2020, international databases, such as Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched for studies evaluating the effects of whey protein supplementation among patients with MetS and associated disorders. PROSPERO database was searched to identify similar records. The strategy of search and keywords are presented in Supplemental file- Table 1 This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the efficacy of whey protein on the following outcomes: parameters of glycemic control including fasting plasma glucose , fasting insulin levels, HOMA-IR, Hemoglobin A1c , and lipid profiles including triglycerides levels, total-, high density lipoprotein , low density lipoprotein , and very density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in fasting state and the total/HDL-cholesterol ratio.

Which Is Better: Soy Or Whey Protein

They are both beneficial for different reasons. Whey protein is broken down in the body better than soy. Because of this the body uses and absorbs whey protein more efficiently.

Whey protein has also been shown to increase muscle mass and strength in those who use it for athletic purposes. Many studies have shown that those who use whey protein are able to build muscle faster, but also do not have as many muscle strains or other related injuries while training.

This is because whey protein also aids in the recovery of muscles. It also improves immunity, which is important for athletes who push their bodies to the limit.

Soy protein is beneficial for those who have high cholesterol. This is because soy protein does not contain cholesterol or lactose. Soy protein is also a popular alternative to meat for those who are vegetarian.

Soy protein has many health benefits, but it also has other functional uses. Soy protein is used for texturizing and emulsification. Some of its other uses are for cosmetics, paints, plastics, textile fibers, cleaning materials, adhesives, resins, and asphalts.

While soy protein has no cholesterol there are those whey proteins without cholesterol as well. Whey protein isolate does not have any cholesterol or fat, which makes it a great choice for those looking to increase their protein intake, but not their cholesterol intake.
