Can Mct Oil Lower Cholesterol

Key Takeaway: Mcts Are Good Fats

Does MCT Oil Raise Your Cholesterol?

Remember, not all saturated fat is as “bad” as some people assume. Depending on where the saturated fat comes from, it can be quite healthful. Think of MCTs as a source of “fast-acting, long-lasting energy.” And unlike the “bad” saturated fats associated with weight gain, insulin resistance, and heart disease, MCTs appear to have numerous health benefits for just about everyone.

Be wary, though, as companies will cut corners by selling MCT oil and MCT oil powder supplements made from low-grade coconut oil and palm kernel oil. These products contain mostly lauric acid and relatively low amounts of “true” medium-chain fatty acids.

Transparent Labs MRP contains MCT oil powder enriched with caprylic acid and caproic acid triglycerides, so you can get more of these “good” fats in your diet wherever life takes you. You can also find a generous dose of MCTs in Transparent Labs Uncut Protein Cereal to help kickstart your day with lasting fuel.

Because of their unique benefits, MCTs have been shown to increase longevity in animal models. Kaunitz, one of the most prominent MCT researchers, reported that the life span is longer when the diet is richer in MCTs than LCTs.

The only evidence that we have for the effect of MCTs on human life span, however, is an epidemiological study from 1978. In this study, the causes of death in many countries were reported. The rate of death due to the complications of heart disease the number one cause of death in the world varied from 38.4 to 187.7 per 1,000,000 in most countries.

In Sri Lanka, however, the reported death rate due to heart disease was only 1 per 1,000,000. One variable that may explain the stark contrast between Sri Lanka and the majority of other countries is the fact that the predominant dietary fat in Sri Lanka is coconut oil, which contains over 50 percent MCTs.

Cholesterol Tests Types Of Ldl And Triglycerides

Cholesterol tests usually include total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels.

As discussed, total cholesterol is somewhat insignificant. High cholesterol may simply mean high HDL. And again, theres not a solid link between total cholesterol and heart disease.

LDL tests are usually a test of LDL-C only . However, most cardiovascular risk is associated with LDL-P , and not LDL-C.

LDL-C can be harmful or not harmful. When the LDL-C quality improves and they become bigger and fluffier cholesterol , this is a positive for health. Saturated fats like MCT improve LDL-C quality.

When the LDL-C is small and dense , they are harmful. In fact, the smaller they are, the more room the lipoprotein has to carry triglycerides. Whats more, this is associated with more particles needed or more LDL-P.

LDL-P and triglycerides are now known to be the best lipid profile tests for cardiovascular disease assessment. High LDL-P is associated with metabolic syndrome and several risk factors .

There are two types of essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6. Most Americans get enough omega-6fatty acids from dietary sources such as meat, eggs and dairy. Fights Off Bad Bacteria

Coconut oil in particular, the greatest component of MCTs, has proved to reduce the growth and spread of yeast, which is the cause of thrush and other skin conditions. The reduction of yeast production in the body is said to be down to the capric, caprylic and lauric acid content found in MCTs.

MCTs have shown to prevent the spread of bacteria in pharmaceutical environments such as hospitals and doctor surgeries by up to 50%. They play a vital role in antibacterial functioning and help reduce the spread of bad bacteria in the body as well as outside of the body.

What The Heck Is Mct Oil

Well, I am glad you asked! MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides which are a super-special type of fats that are six to 12 carbons in length.

There are four main types of MCTs that are categorized by length:

    • Capronic acid: 6 carbons
    • Caprylic acid: 8 carbons
    • Capric acid: 10 carbons
    • Lauric acid: 12 carbons

Technically, lauric acid from a biology perspective, should actually be considered a long-chain triglyceride not an MCT. Lauric acid is processed by your liver unlike MCTs that skip the longer pathway through the liver and are quickly converted into an energy source by our body. Think of lauric acid more like the really close cousin of the MCT family always over at the house but not directly related.

In the modern Western diet, MCT fats are largely excluded. They are a type of saturated fat that are very easy for your body to break down for fuel unlike LCT fats. In fact, from the very beginning we all relied on fat in the form of breast milk for energy and brain development. Even if you werent breastfed, MCT oil derived from palm and coconut oil is added to formulas to mimic breast milk.

MCT oils can be found in two forms: natural and synthetic. Natural MCTs are found in coconut oil, dairy fats, and palm kernel oil as well as certain foods. Two of my favorite sources are coconut oil and grass-fed ghee.

These foods include the percentages of MCTs found in the total amount of fats in each food:

    • Coconut oil: 15 percent
    • Palm kernel oil: 7.9 percent
    • Cheese: 7.3 percent
