Honey Nut Cheerios Lower Cholesterol Good Goes Round

In 2020, Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios were recalled, but not because of glyphosate. General Mills, the company that makes Cheerios and other popular breakfast cereals, issued a recall of the cereals produced at its Lodi, California, site because wheat flour was found in the products that were labeled as gluten-free.

Can I Eat Honey Nut Cheerios On A Diet

Honey Nut Cheerios are a healthy breakfast cereal made from whole grain oats, wheat flour, cornmeal, honey, sugar, skim milk powder, salt, baking soda, vitamin D, calcium, iron, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, folic acid, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, iodine, selenium, chromium, molybdenum, fluoride, and lysine. It is fortified with vitamins A, C, E, B6, B12, folate, biotin, choline, potassium, and fiber. It contains no trans fat, cholesterol, saturated fat, sodium, or added sugars. It is gluten free. It is manufactured by General Mills.

Isnt The Sugar Natural

Earlier on, we highlighted the high sugar content of Honey Nut Cheerios.

You might have been wondering about that. The cereal relies on honey, after all, so it shouldnt be as bad as cereal made with added sugar instead.

There are two issues with that argument.

First, natural sugar tends to be healthier than added sugar. Thats true enough. But, the distinction is based on whether sugar naturally occurs in the food youre eating not where the sugar came from initially.

For example, dates are naturally high in sugar. But, if you use dates in a bliss ball recipe, youre still adding sugar. Similarly, a whole apple is healthy enough, but adding apple juice to a recipe to sweeten it may not be.

To put it simply, sugar isnt healthy just because its unrefined or comes from a better source. Its still sugar and will still have the same effects in your body.

The only reason that natural sugar is better to begin with is because youre finding it in foods that are filled with nutrients and fiber . Strip away those features and youre just left with sugar.

Second, Honey Nut Cheerios use sugar, honey, and brown sugar syrup. Sugar shows up first in the ingredients list, so most of the sweetness come from this, not from honey.

Alternate Healthier Breakfast Options

Although you can enjoy honey nut cheerios and other cereals occasionally, it is best to eat a healthy and well-balanced breakfast that consists of carbs and adequate proteins, healthy fat, high fibers, minerals, and vitamins.

Also, there should be little or no added sugar. This will help you meet all your nutritional needs and prevent unwelcome blood sugar level spikes and keep you full for long.

Here are some quick, easy and healthier breakfast options

  • Oatmeal

This is one of the best cereal choices for people with diabetes. Oats are low in sugar and are a high source of soluble fiber beta-glucan known for its ability to help lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular disease risk.

Note, that all oatmeals are not the same. Instant oatmeal is high in glycemic index, so go for steel-cut oatmeal, rolled oatmeal or oat bran with a low glycemic index.

  • Muesli

It is a combination of oat, dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

Just as in oat, muesli is rich in fiber, high in protein and other nutrients. But unlike oats, most muesli contains added sugar, so it is advisable to check the label and choose the no-sugar variant if you are watching your weight or trying to cut down on your sugar consumption.

  • Yogurt topped with fruit

A serving of yogurt is low in calories, high in protein, vitamins and loaded in probiotics which helps support your gut and immune system.

Greek yogurt or unsweetened yogurt will make a perfect breakfast, plus it is lower in sugar than the sweetened yogurt.

  • Eggs

Cheerios Are Considered A Processed Food

General Mills, Honey Nut Cheerios, 10.8 oz (306 g)

Cheerios are a processed grain product, meaning that the ingredients used to make Cheerios undergo significant processing to create the final product.

Although Cheerios are made with whole grain oats, which sets them apart from other cereals made with more refined grains like corn flour or white rice, many Cheerios varieties are packed with unhealthy ingredients like cane sugar, corn syrup, and preservatives .

Whats more, due to the processing that the oats undergo to make Cheerios, eating a bowl of Cheerios is not the same as enjoying a bowl of whole oats.

One study in 30 adults found that eating Honey Nut Cheerios resulted in a much larger blood sugar and insulin response compared with the consumption of equal portions of less processed grain products including steel cut and old fashioned oats .

Although Honey Nut Cheerios are high in added sugar and thus much more likely to increase blood sugar than unsweetened grain products, studies have shown that the processing of whole grains in general significantly impacts blood sugar response, with more refined products yielding larger blood sugar and insulin spikes .

Although occasionally enjoying Cheerios wont harm your health, its best to choose less processed options whenever possible, especially if you regularly consumed sweetened Cheerios varieties.

For example, instead of your morning bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios, try a bowl of rolled oats topped with berries and a dollop of natural nut butter instead.

How Was It Proven That Cheerios Lowers Cholesterol In The First Place

The study in question funded by General Mills was conducted by the University of Minnesota Heart Disease Prevention Clinic, and was published in the January/February 1998 issue of Tufts Universitys Nutrition in Clinical Care. The study compared the effects of eating a whole grain oat cereal namely Cheerios on high-cholesterol study participants between the ages of 40 and 70 in comparison with a control group composed of the same adult population that was fed commercial corn flakes.

At the conclusion of the study, it was determined that the group that consumed Cheerios lowered its average total cholesterol level by 3.8 percent, and its average LDL cholesterol level by 4.5 percent in comparison to the control group. The discussion section of the study noted, The lipid-lowering effect of this ready-to-eat cereal is similar to studies using hot oatmeal and oat bran, as well as a previous study evaluating the effect of a whole grain oat ready-to-eat cereal.

In other words, theres nothing within the study that suggests that the effects of Cheerios on cholesterol were unique to Cheerios. Rather, the study confirmed that a cold oat cereal could demonstrate the same cholesterol-lowering properties as oatmeal, or any oat cereals that are usually consumed while hot.

Why Its Important To Lower Your Cholesterol

First, its important to know that your body produces two different types of cholesterol. There is the HDL good cholesterol, which helps to remove other forms of cholesterol in your bloodstream and moves it back to your liver, which then flushes it out of your body. Then theres the LDL bad cholesterol, which can build up from lifestyle factors like an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and being overweight, according to the American Heart Association . High levels of LDL bad cholesterol in your blood vessels can result in an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure, according to Cleveland Clinic.

So the key is to produce HDL good cholesterol in your system, which happens through making healthier lifestyle changes, including eating a healthier diet. This happens when you lower your triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood that will elevate your risk of stroke if you have higher concentrations of it. Trans fat and saturated fat are to blame here, which is why eating a healthy complex carb without these fatslike oatmealcan help lower your cholesterol.
