The Mediterranean Diet Can Help Lower Cholesterol

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes plant-based foods, fish, and healthy fats like olive oil all of which can help reduce cholesterol levels.

In fact, a 2020 study published in BMJ found that following the Mediterranean diet for eight weeks lowered LDL cholesterol levels in obese patients.

But it’s not just about lowering LDL it’s also about increasing HDL levels. A 2017 study published in the journal Acta Diabetologica found that when people lost weight following a Mediterranean diet, they also experienced increases in the level of good cholesterol, which lowers the bad cholesterol in your blood.

“A traditional Mediterranean Diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, lean meats, and olive oil is a great one to follow if you are trying to lower cholesterol,” Ungerleider says.

A day on the Mediterranean diet might include the following meals:

  • Breakfast: Oatmeal with nuts and berries
  • Lunch: Salad with vinaigrette dressing and walnuts, fresh fruit, eggs, or whole-grain bread
  • Dinner: Fish with brown rice and vegetables like broccoli or zucchini

Peasant Cultivation For Export In The Caribbean

goodcholesterol are bananas good for low cholesterol ...

The vast majority of the worlds bananas today are cultivated for family consumption or for sale on local markets. India is the world leader in this sort of production, but many other Asian and African countries where climate and soil conditions allow cultivation also host large populations of banana growers who sell at least some of their crop.

Peasant sector banana growers produce for the world market in the Caribbean, however. The Windward Islands are notable for the growing, largely of Cavendish bananas, for an international market, generally in Europe but also in North America. In the Caribbean, and especially in Dominica where this sort of cultivation is widespread, holdings are in the 12 acre range. In many cases the farmer earns additional money from other crops, from engaging in labor outside the farm, and from a share of the earnings of relatives living overseas.

Banana crops are vulnerable to destruction by high winds, such as tropical storms or cyclones.

High Cholesterol Foods To Avoid

However, many studies have shown that its not important what you eat its what you avoid. And in fact, recent dietary guidelines have removed suggestions to limit cholesterol intake to under 300 milligrams per day on lack of evidence that it helps prevent CVD. 2

At the same time, extensive research shows that Mediterranean diets full of unprocessed foods lower high cholesterol while Western diets high in processed foods, saturated fats, and trans-fats raise cholesterol. 23

Researchers believe that saturated and trans-fats are bad because they cause your liver to produce more cholesterol. Food high in saturated fats and trans-fats include:

  • Tropical oils such as palm, kernel, and coconut1
  • Fatty cuts of beef
  • Cheese and whole milk2
  • Commercial cooking, such as pre-baked goods
  • Deep-fried food
  • Fast food, junk food, and other highly processed food3

Of course, some of these foods like cheese and milk are still healthy in appropriate amounts. But if you want to cut dairy products out of your diet completely, your saturated fat levels will thank you.

Portion Size Is Important

Ripeness isnt the only factor when it comes to the amount of sugar in your banana size also matters. The bigger the banana, the more carbs you will be getting.

This means a larger banana will have a greater effect on your blood sugar level. This portion-size effect is called the glycemic load.

Glycemic load is calculated by multiplying the GI of a food by the number of carbs in a serving and then dividing that number by 100.

A score of less than 10 is considered low, 1119 is medium, and 20 or more is high.

Bananas vary in size, from about 18.535 grams.

If a banana is fully ripe , then its glycemic load could range from 11 for a very small banana to 22 for a very large banana.

To ensure that your blood sugar doesnt rise too much, its important to be aware of the size of the banana youre eating.

Summary

The size of the banana you eat determines its effect on your blood sugar level. The larger the banana, the more carbs youll consume and the greater the rise in your blood sugar will be.

Study Suggests Lower Ldl Cholesterol Is Better

Is Banana High In Cholesterol

A recent meta-analysis published in JAMA Cardiology suggests that it is both safe and effective to lower LDL below 70 mg/dL. The authors reviewed a large database of CVD patients with LDL levels averaging 70 mg/dL or less at the start of the studies. On average, there was a 20% drop in CVD risk seen for every 39 mg/dL drop in LDL cholesterol. In other words, a drop in LDL from 70 mg/dL down to 31 mg/dL was associated with 20% fewer CVD events such as heart attack or stroke.

The benefit was consistent regardless of the medications used to lower cholesterol. The JAMA Cardiology meta-analysis looked at studies in which LDL was lowered with a statin drug, which works by lowering LDL production in the liver, or with a different type of medication, including ezetimibe , which interferes with absorption of LDL from the intestine, or PCSK9 inhibitors, newer injectable medicines that increase uptake of LDL from the bloodstream into the liver. The drop in CVD risk was in line with previous studies of patients who started with LDL levels around 130 mg/dL, and saw a drop in CVD events of about 22% for every 39 mg/dL drop in LDL.

In this study, there was no increased risk of adverse outcomes , even when LDL was lowered to as low as 20 mg/dL. Although statin medications themselves have been linked to side effects, especially at high doses, it appears that extremely low LDL concentrations are not responsible for side effects.

Bananas Have A Low Glycemic Index But It Depends On Ripeness

The glycemic index is a measure of how much foods raise blood sugar levels. If a food scores lower than 55, its considered to have a low GI. A score of 5669 is medium, and 70 or above is high.

Foods that contain a lot of simple sugars are quickly absorbed and have a high GI value since they cause a greater rise in blood sugar levels.

Eating a lot of high GI foods has been linked to weight gain and an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke .

Foods with more slowly absorbed carbs have a lower GI and keep your blood sugar levels stable. Since bananas are 90% carbs, theyre sometimes considered a high sugar fruit that could spike your blood sugar.

However, the GI score of bananas is 4262, depending on ripeness. This means theyre low to medium on the glycemic index .

Ripe bananas have a higher GI than greener bananas. The sugar content increases as the banana matures, which in turn affects your blood sugar levels.

In general, bananas seem to release their sugars slowly.

In one study of people with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, adding 9 ounces of banana to participants breakfast for 4 weeks significantly reduced their fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels .

Low GI foods like bananas may also help you feel full and keep blood sugar levels stable. This may lead to weight loss over time .

Summary

Bananas have a low to medium glycemic index value. Their sugar content and blood sugar-raising effects increase as they ripen.

Ldl Cholesterol: How Low Can You Go

Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is a clearly established risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease . Lowering LDL with medications and/or lifestyle changes has been shown to lower CVD risk. Just how far to lower LDL, however, has remained controversial.

Current guidelines developed by the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and several other professional organizations recommend lowering elevated LDL levels to 70 milligrams per deciliter in people with high-risk CVD. However, recent studies have suggested that CVD risk may continue to drop as LDL is lowered beyond these targets, leading some cardiologists to believe that our current guidelines are not aggressive enough. Others are concerned that lowering LDL too much may lead to harm.
