Why Are Omega 3 Fats Good For Health

There has been lots of research into Omega 3 fats and oily fish and how they can improve heart health.

In countries where people eat more oily fish, such as in the Mediterranean, Greenland and Japan, fewer people have heart disease compared to countries where people eat very little oily fish, such as the UK.

The Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA can help protect the heart and blood vessels from disease: They can help:

  • lower triglycerides
  • improve circulation
  • prevent blood clots
  • lower blood pressure
  • keep the rhythm of your heart steady.

In the past, higher levels of the Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA in the blood have also been linked with a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. There is still research on-going, but doctors think that the benefits come from eating foods that contain omega 3s rather than over-the-counter supplements.;However some high-dose Omega 3 supplements may be prescribed by your doctor to treat hypertriglyceridaemia.

Possibly Linked To Increase Prostate Cancer Risk

The verdict is still out, but it seems possible that the fatty acids in fish oil may affect the risk of prostate cancer.

A July 2013 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that men with high blood concentrations of omega-3PUFA have an increased likelihood of developing the disease.

But some similar research, including a March 2017 review of 44 studies in Integrative Cancer Therapies, has found a possible link between higher levels of omega-3 fatty acid intake and lower mortality rates from prostate cancer.

In short: Further research is necessary to draw any firm conclusions.

High Dose Recommended In Science Advisory

byNicole Lou, Staff Writer, MedPage Today August 20, 2019

Prescription omega-3 fatty acids are an “effective and safe option” to cut down triglycerides, according to a science advisory released by the American Heart Association .

However, over-the-counter omega-3 supplements are not reviewed or approved by the FDA and should not be used in place of prescription medication for the long-term management of high triglycerides, cautioned writing group chair Ann Skulas-Ray, PhD, of the University of Arizona, Tucson, in a press release.

Prescription omega-3 fatty acids “at a dose of 4 g/d, are clinically useful for reducing triglycerides, after any underlying causes are addressed and diet and lifestyle strategies are implemented, either as monotherapy or as an adjunct to other triglyceride-lowering therapies,” her group concluded.

Fish oil products containing eicosapentaenoic acid and/or docosahexaenoic acid taken at that dose have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels by at least 30% in patients with triglycerides of 500 mg/dL or greater, according to the statement published online in Circulation.

EPA-only formulations did not raise LDL cholesterol in this group, whereas combination EPA-DHA did, authors noted.

Among people with hypertriglyceridemia in the 200-499 mg/dL range, the 4-g/day dose of prescription omega-3 fatty acids lowered triglycerides by 20% to 30% without significantly increasing LDL cholesterol.

Reduces Adhd Symptoms In Children

Totalcholesterol How Much Cholesterol In Lobster Tail ...

Research shows that using fish oil for ADHD can help reduce the severity of its symptoms. This can be explained by the lower blood levels of EPA and DHA seen in children diagnosed with ADHD. Children find it easier to complete basic tasks while being less hyperactive and less impulsive. Thus, omega-3 appears to be an excellent natural substitute for Adderall.

In the studies that examine the use of omega-3 for ADHD, EPA is always at a higher concentration than DHA. The mechanism by which EPA provides superior results is currently unknown. Further research will determine an optimal EPA:DHA ratio. Until then, any EPA heavy omega-3 fatty acid supplement can effectively treat ADHD in children and adults. It can effectively enhance focus and concentration and support overall brain function.
