How To Handle Side Effects
Donât stop taking your cholesterol drugs even if they donât make you feel great. Instead, talk to your doctor. There are a few ways they might be able to help you feel better:
Take a brief break. If you have muscle pain, your doctor may tell you to stop taking your drug for a short time and then start it again within a month. The time off can show if your medicine is causing the pain or if itâs due to another problem.
Check your other meds. If you take cholesterol drugs and other medicines, you might be more likely to have side effects. Tell your doctor about everything you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter meds, and supplements.
Get a lower dosage. Your doctor may try to reduce how much of your medicine you take. You might also be able to take a pill every other day instead of daily.
Switch treatments. If your side effects are too hard to handle, you might be able to try a different statin such pravastatin and rosuvastatin , which are less likely to cause muscle aches. The cholesterol drug ezetimibe may allow you to take a lower statin dose and thereby help relieve your muscle pain, for example.
Consider OTC treatments. Statins may lower levels of a substance in your muscles called coenzyme Q10, and that can cause pain. You may try taking CoQ10 supplements to get relief. Another option, L-carnitine, might help, too. But always talk to your doctor before you start taking any medicine, even ones you buy without a prescription.
Icipants Methods And Results
We randomised adults stable on 10 or 20 mg of simvastatin at night for primary or secondary prevention of coronary heart disease, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease, to dosings in the morning or evening for a period of eight weeks. We measured fasting blood lipid profiles at baseline and at eight weeks. We sampled blood between 8 30 and 9 30 am. Patients randomised to dosing in the morning were told not to omit it on the day of the follow up blood sample. The primary outcome measure was change in fasting total cholesterol concentration between baseline and follow up. We also measured the concentration of high density lipoprotein, alanine transaminase, low density lipoprotein, and triglyceride. We checked compliance by counting the number of tablets taken between the two visits.
We compared mean lipid concentrations between treatment groups in an intention to treat analysis using analysis of covariance with initial concentration as a covariate. We compared proportions with 2 tests and means with unmatched t tests. The 5% level indicated statistical significance, and we analysed data in SPSS. To show a significant 4% change in mean cholesterol concentration with 80% power, assuming a mean coefficient of variation of 5.5% among patients, we needed 60 patients.
Side Effects Of Statins
Statins do not cause serious side effects for most people. According to the American College of Cardiology, as many as 90 percent of people taking statins do not experience bothersome side effects. For those who do experience side effects, these may include:
- muscle aches, weakness, or cramps
- muscle inflammation, or myositis, which can be serious
- new-onset diabetes, especially in people with other risk factors for diabetes
The state that the risk of these side effects is small and that the benefits of statins usually outweigh this risk.
Some reports have warned that statins can cause severe memory loss, but an investigation found inconsistent evidence of this side effect. Another review states that there is evidence to suggest that statins do not affect memory.
In rare cases, a person taking statins may have serious side effects, such as liver damage or an allergic reaction. The following side effects require immediate medical attention:
Statins can interact with some medications. People who take statins will need to make their doctor aware of any medicines, vitamins, herbs, or other supplements that they take to help prevent dangerous interactions.
Statins may also interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Therefore, it is important to avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking statins unless a doctor says it is safe.
Smoking is a significant risk factor for heart disease. A doctor may advise a person to get help with quitting if they do smoke.

When Is The Best Time To Take Cholesterol Medicine
If you have high cholesterol, your doctor will prescribe statin medication. Statins are the most effective medications available to lower LDL cholesterol levels within a few months of taking them. Your doctor may also ask you to change other aspects of your daily diet and lifestyle habits that contribute to heart disease risksuch as eating less saturated fat, exercising more regularly, reducing sodium intake, avoiding alcohol use if possible, and quitting smoking. If these changes are not enough to bring down your LDL cholesterol level considerably within 3-6 months or if additional treatment or lifestyle changes are needed then you should consult with a cardiologist who can provide options for treating high blood pressure in combination with statin treatment .

Does It Matter When I Take A Statin
Q. My doctor put me on a statin and told me to take it after dinner. I would rather take it with breakfast. Does it matter?
A. Statins block an enzyme that helps the liver make cholesterol. In most people, cholesterol production peaks late in the evening. The body breaks down fluvastatin , lovastatin , pravastatin , and simvastatin fairly quickly. So taking them in the evening ensures that you have enough medicine on board when you need it the most. Two other statins, atorvastatin and rosuvastatin aren’t broken down as readily, so you can take them any time.

Best At Night: Rheumatoid Arthritis Meds
The problem with taking a steroid-based pain reliever like prednisone when you wake up is that most arthritis sufferers experience joint stiffness and pain in the morning. If you take your medication at nightideally, a low-dose, delayed-release formula that takes effect around 3 a.m.it can curb the inflammation that happens while youre sleeping and ease those morning symptoms. Thats what Italian researchers found: They say this timing takes the bodys circadian rhythms into account and can help tamp down inflammatory substances like cortisol and cytokine that can peak during the night. Other research suggests taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as Motrin and Aleve at night may also reduce pain symptoms before they really kick in.

Can Statins Increase My Risk For Memory Loss Or Dementia
Memory and cognitive symptoms from statin use are very uncommon, and it is unclear if statins are really the culprit. When symptoms have been reported, theyre typically not severe and usually resolve when the statin dosage is adjusted or the medication is switched.Affected patients have reported feeling unfocused or fuzzy in their thinking, but these experiences are rare. Concerns about long-term cognitive problems and memory loss due to use of statins have not been proven. On the contrary, most recent data actually point to potential prevention of dementia due to statin use. These data are logical because one of the major causes of dementia is atherosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries in the brain. There is strong evidence that statins protect against atherosclerosis. Its one of the invisible benefits of taking a statin medication. Also, keep in mind that increasingly high cholesterol and memory problems both are common symptoms of aging. Sometimes its difficult to disentangle these two, and thats why statin use and memory problems may seem related at times. If youre concerned about statins and memory loss, dont stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor. There may be other reasons for your memory symptoms, or alternate treatments for your high cholesterol can be considered.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25, 2018 Combining medication that lowers blood pressure with medication that lowers cholesterol reduced first-time strokes by 44 percent, according to research presented at the American Stroke Associations International Stroke Conference 2018, a world premier meeting dedicated to the science and treatment of cerebrovascular disease for researchers and clinicians.
Seventy-five percent of strokes are first-time strokes. High blood pressure and high cholesterol both increase the risk for stroke, the fifth leading cause of death in America. Yet, its not known whether combining drugs that lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels can protect individuals from stroke.
Now, a study involving 12,705 participants from 21 countries shows that individually, drugs that lower blood pressure or cholesterol do indeed reduce stroke risk, but when combined, they offer even greater protection.

How Blood Pressure Medications Work
Blood pressure tends to vary during the day. It tends to be higher when you wake up in the morning and during the morning hours, and lower in the night and when sleeping. However, there are people whose blood pressure does not drop at night researchers call these “non-dippers.”
Most blood pressure medications have been designed for ease of use, meaning they are meant to be taken once per day. Even so, these medications are not equally effective over the entire 24-hour period during which they are active.
The action of blood pressure drugs peaks anywhere from four to 15 hours later after you take a dose. Ideally, the drug is prescribed so that the peak concentration coincides with the time of day when your blood pressure is at its highest.
There are several different types of blood pressure medications that have different mechanisms of action and are thus best taken at certain times of day.
Medications that are best taken in the morning:
- Diuretics, or water-pills”:These include Diuril and Lozol , and work by helping your kidneys get rid of extra water in your body. Because diuretics can cause you to urinate more , it’s best to take them in the morning. If you need a second dose, take it by mid-afternoon.
Some other common blood pressure medications that are best taken at bedtime include:
- ACE inhibitors , including Lotensin and Vasotec
- ARBs , such as Avapro
- Beta blockers, such as Lopressor
- Calcium Channel blockers, such as Norvasc
