Fish oil or, more precisely, omega-3 fatty acids offers so many health benefits, including reduction of risk of heart disease, that most experts recommend that everyone eat more coldwater, oily fish, . Fish provide both of the omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid our bodies need. Another omega-3 precursor, alpha-linolenic acid , occurs in nuts , leafy vegetables, flaxseed and some animal fat, especially from grass-fed animals. The body must convert ALA into EPA and DHA, an inefficient process.
Omega-3s are so important to heart health that my longstanding recommendation has been to consume two to three servings of fish per week or to take a fish oil supplement if you dont like fish. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two fish meals a week. I eat fish often and also take 2-3 grams of supplemental fish oil a day.

May Help Lower Cholesterol Levels
Whether you get it from your diet or a supplement, omega-3 fatty acids may help move the meter when it comes to your total cholesterol.
In a December 2017 study published in Nutrition & Diabetes, study authors examined the lipid profiles of patients with hyperlipidemia another name for high cholesterol who either took a fish oil supplement or consumed fish twice a week for eight weeks.

However, fish oil isnt just cheaper. It is also often much more accessible.
Depending on where you live and shop, you may have a harder time finding krill oil supplements, and youll likely find less of a selection than fish oil.

Cholesterols Little Known Secret
The classification of HDL as the good cholesterol and LDL as bad cholesterol is a simple generalization to help us understand the different functions of lipoproteins in the body. The truth is that both lipoproteins are simply carriers of cholesterol. They are best described as packages for cholesterol transportation.
In this regard, high-density lipoprotein or HDL transports cholesterol from the blood while low-density lipoprotein or LDL is responsible for carrying cholesterol through the blood.
Therefore, although a high level of HDL cholesterol improves cardiovascular health, a high level of LDL cholesterol does not necessarily worsen cardiovascular health. It is what happens to LDL cholesterol that makes it bad for the heart.
Specifically, LDL cholesterol only turns bad when it becomes oxidized by free radicals.
Furthermore, other non-HDL can be turned dangerous by these free radicals.
Therefore, the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterols are not the only factors affecting cardiovascular health. Other non-HDL cholesterols besides LDL are also important.
Why Are Omega 3 Fats Good For Health
There has been lots of research into Omega 3 fats and oily fish and how they can improve heart health.
In countries where people eat more oily fish, such as in the Mediterranean, Greenland and Japan, fewer people have heart disease compared to countries where people eat very little oily fish, such as the UK.
The Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA can help protect the heart and blood vessels from disease: They can help:
- lower triglycerides
- improve circulation
- prevent blood clots
- lower blood pressure
- keep the rhythm of your heart steady.
In the past, higher levels of the Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA in the blood have also been linked with a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. There is still research on-going, but doctors think that the benefits come from eating foods that contain omega 3s rather than over-the-counter supplements. However, some high-dose Omega 3 supplements may be prescribed by your doctor to treat hypertriglyceridaemia.

If You Already Have Heart Disease Fish Oil Won’t Help
Fish oil supplements seem to help prevent more troubles for people with heart disease. Heart patients should get about 1 gram of EPA and DHA combined, preferably from fish, every day. Supplements may also help, but check with your doctor.
If you take aspirin, warfarin, or other drugs for heart patients, know that fish oil can thin the blood. At high doses, it might thin it too much.

Since the initial discovery of the connection between fish oil and heart health in the 1970s, there have been more than 36,000 studies on eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid omega-3 fatty acids. These two main omega-3s, found in fish oil, are now among the most thoroughly studied nutrients in the world for heart health.

What About Supplements
Here at HEART UK we dont recommend supplements of Omega 3s. Its always best to get your nutrients from foods rather than supplements.
Thats because foods contain a whole range of different nutrients which improve your health in different ways. But supplements only contain specific nutrients.
If you choose to top up on Omega 3s by using over-the-counter supplements, follow these golden rules.
- Choose a fish oil or an Omega 3 supplement.
- Dont choose fish liver oils, they contain less Omega 3 than fish oils and too much vitamin A.
- Go for a supplement with lower levels of vitamin A less than 1mg per day .
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid supplements that contain vitamin A altogether. Beta carotene .
- Aim to get 500mg of EPA and DHA combined each day, this works out as around the same as a 140g portion of oily fish per week.
- If you take medicines to thin your blood, such as aspirin, warfarin or heparin, speak to your doctor before taking fish oil supplements they can also thin your blood.
- If you are vegan or vegetarian, you can take marine oils made from algae.

How Statins Work
Statins stop the body from making cholesterol. They also help it to reabsorb plaque thats built up on the artery walls.
One longitudinal study found that 27.8 percent of Americans over 40 years old were using statins as of 2013.
2011 review , have found a decreased risk of heart disease in people taking fish oil supplements. Other studies, such as one 2013 clinical trial of 12,000 people with cardiovascular risk factors, have found no such evidence.
In addition, although fish oil does decrease triglycerides, there isnt sufficient evidence that it lowers heart attack risk.
When it comes to lowering low-density lipoprotein , also known as bad cholesterol, the evidence simply isnt there. In fact, fish oil can actually increase LDL levels for some people according to a 2013 literature review.
Food and Drug Administration , statins show an indisputable ability to prevent heart disease but should be taken with care.
Statins have benefits in addition to reducing your cholesterol. For example, they have anti-inflammatory properties that could work to stabilize blood vessels, and they can help prevent heart attacks, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Its because of their potential side effects, such as muscle pain, that theyre generally only prescribed to people with high cholesterol and a risk of cardiovascular disease. Theyre not considered preventive medicine.
