High cholesterol is caused by having too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol falls into two categories – LDL and HDL .

According to the American Heart Association, Experts believe that HDL acts as a scavenger, carrying LDL cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where the LDL is broken down and passed from the body.

Too much bad cholesterol can increase the risk of serious health problems, such as narrowing of the arteries, heart attack and stroke, whereas good cholesterol can protect against these risks.

A Cardiologist’s Top 10 Things To Know About Fish Oil Supplements

There’s more to consider about taking this common product than you may know.

Who knew that the decision to take a simple supplement like fish oil could be so complicated?

Omega-3 fatty acids may help decrease inflammation and decrease the risk of developing heart disease. At first, taking a supplement seems to be an easy decision. After all, why eat fish if you can get the active ingredients in a pill? Manufacturers tout the benefits relentlessly, but sometimes push so hard it seems as if they are trying to sell snake oil. Contrast that with studies suggesting that taking fish oil is worthless, or may cause harm. What does the evidence suggest? Here are some important things to consider:

  • Despite many studies done over the last few years, there is no absolute proof that taking omega-3 fatty acids will decrease your risk of having a heart attack. Studies are in progress to determine whether adding omega-3 fatty acids to a medical regimen including statins will lower your risk of a heart attack if you already have coronary artery disease.

  • DHA and EPA are the active ingredients in omega-3 fatty acids and have been shown in multiple studies to lower triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are a kind of fat, very different from cholesterol, that can cause irritation of the lining of blood vessels, especially when accompanied by low HDL cholesterol.

  • Health Benefits Of Fish Oil

Research proves that fish oil leads to a significant reduction in triglyceride levels. In addition, fish oil is healthy for the body in multiple ways. Some of those are:

    • Reduces blood pressure
    • Amplifies mental health
    • Strengthens the scalp

Infants get omega-3 through breastfeeding. However, younger children dont. Therefore, they should consume an omega-3 rich diet for steady growth.

    Does Fish Oil Raise Cholesterol

    by Health Professional

Katie had an LDL of 87 mg/dl, HDL of 48 mg/dl, triglycerides of 201 mg/dl. By conventional standards, not too bad.

Reading about the heart health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, Katie added fish oil. With the preparation she bought, 4000 mg per day provided 1200 mg the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Three months later her LDL was 118 mg/dl, HDL 54 mg/dl, triglycerides 92 mg/dl.

In other words, LDL cholesterol increased by 31 mg. What happened?

Several studies have, indeed, confirmed that fish oil raises LDL cholesterol, usually by 5-10 mg/dl. Occasionally, it may be as much as 20 or more milligrams, as in Katie’s case, enough for some people to be scared away from continuing this supplement.

Unfortunately, many physicians often assume that it’s the cholesterol content of fish oil capsules, or some vague, undesirable effect of fish oil. It’s nothing of the kind. And, if you were to rely on basic cholesterol values, it does indeed appear to be the case.

    But it’s not.

Another factor: Conventional LDL cholesterol is a calculated value, not measured. The calculation for LDL is thrown off-sometimes considerably-by any reduction in HDL or rise in triglycerides from average values. In Katie’s case, the rise in HDL from 48 to 54 mg/dl along with the reduction in triglycerides from 201 to 92 mg/dl mean that calculated LDL has become more accurate and rises towards the true measured value. The actual rise in true LDL cholesterol may be small to none.

Slows Down The Risk Of Kidney Disease

    Omega 3 Products: Omega

Taking fish oil has seemed to slow down the risk of kidney disease in high risk patients with IgA nephropathy. The studies show short-term effectiveness as opposed to long-term, however the use of fish oil can slow down the impact. It also shows to have a greater impact when taken in higher doses.

Similarly, fish oil has shown to be beneficial for those with kidney damage. Cyclosporine is a drug commonly taken to reduce organ rejection which over the years has shown to cause kidney damage. For those who are currently taking cyclosporine, fish oil studies suggest that the fish oil can prevent kidney damage. It also helps the kidneys recover after taking a course of cyclosporine. Again, these results are short-term but have shown to be effective.

Much attention has been focused recently on the growing popularity of vitamin/mineral-fortified products and vitamin/mineral supplements as a means of promoting health. It seems many people want a quick fix”–opting to improve their health with these products instead of building a healthy body from a wide variety of food sources.

The latest development for the pill-popping generation is fish oil supplements. The supplements are being lauded because one of their components–omega-3 fatty acid–is implicated in everything from the reduction of serum cholesterol levels in the bloodstream to its ability to relieve the discomforts of immune system diseases, skin disorders and allergies.

But is all this hype about omega-3 just another food fad? The jury is still out on supplementation, but the results of epidemiologic studies on people who eat fish instead of red meat are encouraging.

Physicians and nutritionists gathered in Los Angeles recently for a symposium discussing the possible role of fish oils in the American diet. The discussions included a historical perspective on coronary heart disease in the United States, revealed the results of research data on the effects of fish oils in the body and suggested ways of designing diets to include fish rich in omega-3.

    Optimum Benefits

Physicians are now recommending at least three to four fish meals per week for optimum benefit. There has been no recommended intake for fish oil capsules.

Data from a predominantly male, normolipidemic, middle-aged cohort of 9,253 individuals indicated that fish oil supplementation was not associated with increases in LDL-cholesterol levels.

In addition, fish oil supplementation was associated with increases in red blood cell levels of DHA.

ncreases in the omega-3 index and in erythrocyte DHA over time were associated with modestly decreased levels of LDL-C, wrote the researchers, led by Dr William Harris from the Fatty Acid Research Institute .

These findings can reassure individuals who, in making healthier lifestyle choices, want to increase their intake of omega-3 fatty acids , that clinically significant adverse effects on LDL-C are unlikely to occur.

    Good Cholesterol Vs Bad Cholesterol

When your doctor checks your cholesterol with a blood test called a lipid panel, the results arent simply one number. A full picture of your cholesterol level and whether or not it needs lowering comes from four separate but related values: LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and total blood cholesterol.

LDL, often referred to as bad cholesterol, stands for low-density lipoprotein. LDL transports cholesterol through your bloodstream to your cells. The bad part of LDL is that in high levels, it tends to build up fatty plaques inside your arteries a condition called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis reduces blood flow through the affected arteries, leading to an increased risk of heart and kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, heart attack, and blood clots. For adults, a healthy LDL level is less than 100 mg/dl.

HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is often referred to as good cholesterol. It helps remove LDL from your bloodstream by carrying it back to the liver, where its broken down for excretion. Thus, HDL helps protect your heart from disease and lowers your risk of stroke. A healthy HDL level for adults is more than 60 mg/dl.

    Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat that stores excess energy from the calories you consume. A high level of triglycerides indicates an increased risk of stroke and heart disease. A triglyceride blood test result above 150 mg/dl is considered too high.

Why Are Omega 3 Fats Good For Health

There has been lots of research into Omega 3 fats and oily fish and how they can improve heart health.

In countries where people eat more oily fish, such as in the Mediterranean, Greenland and Japan, fewer people have heart disease compared to countries where people eat very little oily fish, such as the UK.

The Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA can help protect the heart and blood vessels from disease: They can help:

    • lower triglycerides
    • improve circulation
    • prevent blood clots
    • lower blood pressure
    • keep the rhythm of your heart steady.

In the past, higher levels of the Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA in the blood have also been linked with a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. There is still research on-going, but doctors think that the benefits come from eating foods that contain omega 3s rather than over-the-counter supplements. However, some high-dose Omega 3 supplements may be prescribed by your doctor to treat hypertriglyceridaemia.

    Types Of Fish Oil Supplements

    Composition Of Fish Oil

As we know it, fish oil can be consumed from oily fish or as capsules. The composition of the supplements is a little different to consuming fish in its natural form as the ingredients need to be balanced in order to be safe, pure and effective.

Fish oil supplements come as capsules and are largely made up of omega-3 fatty acids. The two main fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are the active ingredients which provide the numerous health benefits. The proteins and nutrients are pressed from the fish, which is where the oil splitting process happens. After pressing, the omega-3s content is released and then composed into capsules. It is a simple process and ensures the ingredients to be pure.

Fish oil has numerous benefits for a variety of ages and medical conditions. Is it made safe for all ages and non-intervening conditions, but you may be wondering who exactly it is for. Here is more:

What Are The Dosages To Respect

4 Benefits of Fish Oil, Based on Science

The recommended dosage of fish oil differs depending on age and current health state. It also depends on the form of which you consume fish oil. If taken as a supplement, dosages can vary depending on the level of DHA and EPA in the supplement.

WHO recommends taking a daily dose of 0.2 0.5 grams of combined EPA and DHA. You can increase the dosage if you require a higher percentage of fish oil for medical diseases.

Many supplements contain around 1,000 mg of fish oil but only 300 mg of that consists of EPA and DHA, the main active ingredients from the omega-3 fatty acids. It is recommended to buy fish oil with a higher EPA and DHA content, of around 500 mg for increased effectiveness.

    Cholesterols Little Known Secret

The classification of HDL as the good cholesterol and LDL as bad cholesterol is a simple generalization to help us understand the different functions of lipoproteins in the body. The truth is that both lipoproteins are simply carriers of cholesterol. They are best described as packages for cholesterol transportation.

In this regard, high-density lipoprotein or HDL transports cholesterol from the blood while low-density lipoprotein or LDL is responsible for carrying cholesterol through the blood.

Therefore, although a high level of HDL cholesterol improves cardiovascular health, a high level of LDL cholesterol does not necessarily worsen cardiovascular health. It is what happens to LDL cholesterol that makes it bad for the heart.

Specifically, LDL cholesterol only turns bad when it becomes oxidized by free radicals.

Furthermore, other non-HDL can be turned dangerous by these free radicals.

Therefore, the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterols are not the only factors affecting cardiovascular health. Other non-HDL cholesterols besides LDL are also important.

Fish Oil Supplements: Benefits Types And Precautions

Oily and fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, trout, tuna, sardine, and herring contain fish oil. They provide omega-3 fatty acids and are rich in vitamins A & D. Omega-3 fatty acids comprise a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids. If you dont eat fish, fish oil supplements are your best bet to fulfil your bodys omega-3 fatty acids requirement.

The FDA recommends fish oil for daily consumption. It significantly lowers the triglyceride levels of the body and improves heart health. It also ensures proper blood circulation. In addition, it prevents heart diseases and strokes. Fish oil is also beneficial for many kidney-related problems.

The omega-3 fatty acids play multiple roles in our bodies. For example, they help in cell growth and muscle activity. However, since our bodies do not produce omega-3 fatty acids, only foods provide them. These fatty acids also prevent the clotting of blood. They can help avoid strokes.

    Plasma Cholesterol Vs Lipoprotein Cholesterol

A 1986 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition provided support for the benefits of fish oil omega-3 fatty acids even when combined with high cholesterol intake.

The study involved 6 participants tested with 3 diets. The participants were first placed on a diet providing 710 mg/day of cholesterol. Thereafter, they ate a diet with lower cholesterol content along with 40 g/day of fish oil. Finally, they took the same fish oil supplement and an egg yolk diet with high cholesterol content .

The results of the study showed that switching from a high-cholesterol diet to a low-cholesterol diet plus fish oil supplement reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

The dietary change and fish oil supplementation lowered VLDL, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels as well as the level of apoproteins A1 and B.

When the study participants were switched back to a high-cholesterol diet plus fish oil supplement, only plasma cholesterol rose. There was no significant increase in lipoprotein cholesterol or apoprotein levels.

These results showed that even though fish oil supplements may not reduce the amount of cholesterol in the plasma, it can reduce the amount of cholesterol carried by lipoproteins . Since lipoprotein cholesterols are the determinant of cardiovascular health, fish oil can improve cardiovascular health even when plasma measurements indicate it does not lower cholesterol levels.
