Is Alcohol Always Bad For Cholesterol

How Drinking Alcohol Affects Your Cholesterol

So, does alcohol cause high cholesterol in every situation?

In excess, alcohol can be a factor in high cholesterol levels. But in moderation, alcohol is not always a bad thing. In fact, some studies suggest that red wine can actually increase HDL levels, due to chemicals called polyphenols6.

Its important to point out, however, that these same beneficial compounds are available in ordinary grapes and other fruits such as blueberries. And, according to the American Heart Association, regular exercise is much more effective at raising HDL levels than drinking wine7.

In other words, while small amounts of red wine may not make your cholesterol worse, it shouldnt be your go-to for balancing your LDL/HDL levels.

How Beer Affects Cholesterol

Most cholesterol is made in your body, and the rest comes from your diet.

When your doctor talks about your cholesterol, theyre actually talking about two types of cholesterol HDL and LDL along with triglycerides, which are a type of fat. When we refer to total cholesterol, its a combination of HDL and LDL cholesterol plus triglycerides.

While a cold brew may raise your spirits, beer raises triglyceride levels. This is because beer contains carbohydrates and alcohol, two substances that raise triglycerides quickly. And people who are more sensitive to the effects of beer can experience even higher levels of triglycerides.

Since triglycerides are part of the total cholesterol count, this means that if your triglycerides increase, your total cholesterol increases as well. Ideally, your triglyceride level should be below 150 milligrams per deciliter .

Serum ALT, AST, and ALP level were markers of hepatocyte necrosis. In our experiments, serum ALT was normal in the NLG , very mildly elevated in the CLG , significantly increased in the ALG and CALG, with almost 2-fold elevated in the CALG and serum ALT in the CALG significantly increased compared with the CLG ). Meanwhile, serum AST changed, as well as compared with the NLG or CLG, was the same tendency like ALT in all experimental groups after feeding 5 weeks ). Serum ALP also significantly increased in the CALG compared with the NLG or CLG ).

Mice fed with 4% alcohol and 0.5% cholesterol LD increasing serum levels of liver enzymes and fasting lipids for feeding 5 weeks. Liver damage reflected by levels of serum ALT, AST, and ALP. Serum lipids of TC, TG, HDL-c, and LDL-c were detected. Values were expressed as the mean ± SD . #P< 0.05 ##P< 0.01 versus NLG P< 0.05 P< 0.01 versus CLG.

What is more, serum TG was significantly elevated in the ALG, but there were the opposite results in the CLG and CALG compared with the NLG ). Serum TC and LDL-c were all significantly increased in the CALG and only serum LDL-c was significantly increased in the CLG compared with the NLG and 3). There was no significant change in serum HDL-c in all groups ). It indicated that the combination of alcohol and cholesterol diet induced more severe liver injury and disorder of lipid metabolism in mice.

  • When you drink alcohol, its broken down and rebuilt into triglycerides and cholesterol in the liver. So, drinking alcohol raises the triglycerides and cholesterol in your blood.
  • If your triglyceride levels become too high, they can build up in the liver, causing fatty liver disease. The liver cant work as well as it should and cant remove cholesterol from your blood, so your cholesterol levels rise.
  • Alcohol can lead to the combination of a high triglyceride level along with low HDL cholesterol. This can lead to heart disease.

  • Milk drinkers may consume less fat overall compared to people who cannot break down the lactose sugar. Higher fat dairy products like butter and cheese typically contain less lactose therefore, people who cannot break down the sugar may consume more of these higher-calorie foods.

What Should My Cholesterol Levels Be

Blood cholesterol is measured in units called millimoles per litre of blood, often shortened to mmol/L.

As a general guide, total cholesterol levels should be:

  • 5mmol/L or less for healthy adults
  • 4mmol/L or less for those at high risk

As a general guide, LDL levels should be:

  • 3mmol/L or less for healthy adults
  • 2mmol/L or less for those at high risk

An ideal level of HDL is above 1mmol/L. A lower level of HDL can increase your risk of heart disease.

Your ratio of total cholesterol to HDL may also be calculated. This is your total cholesterol level divided by your HDL level. Generally, this ratio should be below four, as a higher ratio increases your risk of heart disease.

Cholesterol is only one risk factor. The level at which specific treatment is required will depend on whether other risk factors, such as smoking and high blood pressure, are also present.

What Is High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is when thereâs too much bad cholesterol and/or not enough good cholesterol in your blood.

This picture shows what it looks like if you have low cholesterol, normal cholesterol and bad cholesterol levels.

Sometimes health professionals talk about the terms dyslipidaemia and hyperlipidaemia. Both are clinical terms that mean your levels of cholesterol are outside the normal range.

Symptoms of high cholesterol

You wonât know if you have high cholesterol because it doesnât usually have symptoms. The only way to know is to have a blood test.

Why does high cholesterol matter?

When your cholesterol is too high it can build up as plaque in your arteries. If the plaque gets too big, or breaks off, it can cause a heart attack and stroke. This risk also increases when your triglycerides are too high.

Your doctor will use the results of your blood test and your other heart attack risk factors to decide whether you need medication to lower your cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

Where Does All The Extra Cholesterol Come From

While your body makes all the cholesterol you need, you also get some from your diet. Cholesterol is found in animal-derived foods such as beef, chicken, fish, and cheese. Because of this, it was long thought that dietary cholesterol contributed to elevated blood cholesterol.

We used to recommend that patients limit their consumption of foods like eggs yolks if they had high cholesterol. We now know that dietary cholesterol in the amounts Americans typically consume has very little influence on blood cholesterol levels.

How Much Alcohol Is Too Much

Howtoreducecholesterol Does Alcohol Raise Cholesterol Levels ...

While alcohol often gets a bad rap, research is showing that it may not need to be avoided altogether to have good heart health.

The interpretation of too much will vary from person to person. Factors such as age, body size, and liver size all determine how quickly alcohol will be metabolized. Some people can break down alcohol more quickly than others.

The general recommendation is for adults to not participate in anything more than moderate drinking, with less drinking being even better. Moderate drinking is defined as 1 to 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women.

In the United States, 1 standard drink is considered to be:

  • 12 ounces of regular beer

  • 5 ounces of wine

  • 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits

Keep in mind that aside from raising cholesterol and triglyceride levels, excessive drinking is also linked to a long list of other health consequences including cancer, heart disease, birth defects, injuries caused by driving under the influence, memory problems, mental health disorders, alcohol poisoning, and more.

If you drink alcohol or have liver damage, talk to your doctor before taking cholesterol medications known as statins. These medications may cause liver problems, and alcohol use may increase the risk of liver issues.

Can Alcohol Affect A Cholesterol Test

Absolutely. Heres why.

Much of the alcohol that flows into your system after tipping back a glass finds its way to your liver for a digestive after-party. Alcohol is broken down in your liver and reconstructed as cholesterol and triglycerides.

The more you drink, the more your levels of cholesterol and triglycerides rise. As you might imagine, high levels of either type of this waxy fat are not exactly desirable for managing cholesterol or optimal health.

People who drink a lot of alcohol tend to have very high triglycerides, says Dr. Cho. That can be a concern because elevated triglyceride levels can increase your risk for diabetes, pancreatitis and stroke.
