Bananas are often found at the breakfast table and a much loved staple of kids snacktimes, they are the fruit of a plant from the genus Musa.Bananas are indigenous to Australia and Southeast Asia. They arecultivated in more than 100 countries with tropical climates. Bananasare non-seasonal and can be harvested throughout the year. The mostpopular banana eaten in Western countries is the Cavendish banana. Uncommonly sold prior to the 1950s, the Cavendish banana becamewidely exported after the former worldwide favorite Gros Michel wasdeemed commercially unviable. This change was caused by theproliferation of Panama disease, a fungal infection which affectedthe roots of Gros Michel banana plants. Cavendish bananas are notaffected by Panama disease. However, Cavendish bananas lack geneticdiversity and are therefore also susceptible to future emergentdiseases. While most bananas are eaten when yellow and ripe, theycan also be consumed green if cooked. Many cultures around the worldconsume green bananas.

What Is The Weird Fruit That Fights Cholesterol

A team of volunteers ate half a kilo of strawberries a day for a month to see whether it altered their blood parameters in any way. At the end of this unusual treatment, their levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly reduced, according to the analyses conducted by Italian and Spanish scientists.

How Is High Cholesterol Diagnosed

To diagnose high cholesterol, your doctor will have to order a lipid panel to look at the level of cholesterol in your blood. Typically, this involves fasting for twelve hours before the test to get the most accurate reading. Doctors will then analyze the results, looking at the levels of HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol in your blood. 14

As theres some disagreement about what constitutes healthy cholesterol, doctors now consider cholesterol on a case-by-case basis for most adults, largely doing away with standardized charts in recent years. However, some still reference the previously considered healthy guidelines for baseline guidance : 14

  • Healthy total cholesterol: below 200mg/dL
  • Healthy LDL cholesterol: below 130mg/dL
  • Healthy HDL cholesterol: above 40gm/dL for men above 50mg/dL for women

Physical Signs Of High Cholesterol You Should Know About

Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is developed naturally in the body. It performs several vital functions like rebuilding walls surrounding the bodys cells and converting basic materials into certain hormones.

You only need a small amount of cholesterol and almost all of them are produced by your body. Most of the cholesterol in your body is produced in your liver. The rest of them come from your diet. This kind of dietary cholesterol is present in foods such as eggs, meat, and dairy products.

If you have too much cholesterol in your bloodstream, you have high cholesterol. High cholesterol increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. For this reason, knowing the cholesterol levels in your blood is quite important to prevent any future heart disease and blockages of blood vessels.

There are two main types of cholesterol you should be aware of:

In other words, high levels of LDL cholesterol can cause more plaque accumulation and increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke and other diseases. On the other hand, high levels of HDL cholesterol can actually help prevent heart attacks and strokes. HDL gains its good name by removing LDL cholesterol from the arteries and tissues and bringing it back to the liver where the excessive LDL cholesterol is broken down.

As youre preparing meals, you can reduce the fat content of meat by:

    • Selecting lean cuts of meat with no visible fat
    • Trimming remaining fat or gristle from meat and removing the skin before serving
    • Grilling, broiling, or roasting meat rather than frying it with high-fat butter or oil

With fruits and vegetables, avoid excess adding salt, sugar, butter, or canola oil. To avoid diminishing their nutritional power, avoid adding sweet sauces, fat, or grease to beans and legumes.

Instead, add flavor with spices. Aside from being tasty, many popular herbs and spices have properties that can change how LDL cholesterol interacts with free radicalsparticles that can make the molecules in LDL unstable, causing inflammation and further impacting your cardiovascular health. The antioxidants in some fresh herbs and spices may prevent these harmful interactions. Garlic is another healthy and versatile option for savory meals that can help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

When baking, try adding ginger, allspice, and cinnamon. These are all high in antioxidants. Instead of making baked goods using lard, butter, or oil, try using substitutes like applesauce, banana, or avocado.

    American Heart Association Guidelines

If you limit fat, sugar and alcohol in your diet, you can reduce your triglycerides by 20 percent, according to a scientific statement released in April 2011 by the American Heart Association. The statement, based on a review of more than 500 international studies, also noted that you could reduce your triglycerides by an additional 20 to 30 percent if you exercise regularly. The AHA guidelines call for restricting saturated fat to 16 grams a day, trans fat to 2 grams a day, calories from added sugars to about 100 to 200 a day, and fructose a sugar that occurs naturally in apples, bananas and other fruit to between 50 grams and 100 grams a day. You should also limit alcoholic beverages to one or two a day and exercise moderately at least 150 minutes per week.

Peasant Cultivation For Export In The Caribbean

The vast majority of the worlds bananas today are cultivated for family consumption or for sale on local markets. India is the world leader in this sort of production, but many other Asian and African countries where climate and soil conditions allow cultivation also host large populations of banana growers who sell at least some of their crop.

Peasant sector banana growers produce for the world market in the Caribbean, however. The Windward Islands are notable for the growing, largely of Cavendish bananas, for an international market, generally in Europe but also in North America. In the Caribbean, and especially in Dominica where this sort of cultivation is widespread, holdings are in the 12 acre range. In many cases the farmer earns additional money from other crops, from engaging in labor outside the farm, and from a share of the earnings of relatives living overseas.

Banana crops are vulnerable to destruction by high winds, such as tropical storms or cyclones.
