Foods Rich In Unsaturated Fats
Cutting down on saturated fat and replace some of it with unsaturated fats is great way to lower your cholesterol. Foods which contain unsaturated fats include:
- vegetable oils such as olive, sunflower, corn, rapeseed, nut and seed oils
- avocado, nuts and seeds
- a medium sized vegetable such as a turnip, parsnip, sweet potato, leek, tomato or carrot
- a medium sized fruit for example, an apple, orange or banana
- 2 small fruits such as plums or satsumas
- a handful of berries or grapes and other small fruits like strawberries and prunes
- a good-sized slice of a larger fruit such as a melon, mango or pineapple
- a tablespoon of dried fruit
- a 150ml glass of fruit juice
- a bowl of salad
Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, tinned, frozen or dried. They all count. If you choose tinned, choose options in juice or water, without added sugar or salt.
Potatoes, yams, cassava and plantains are exceptions. They dont count because they count as a starchy food, like rice or pasta.
Unsweetened fruit juice and smoothies count too, but only one portion. More than one doesnt count because the loose sugar and acid in them can damage your teeth.
The Meat Of The Matter
Creating a healthy meal plan to maintain your cholesterol doesnt mean you have to omit meat altogether. While some types of meat are high in saturated fat, there are plenty of leaner options.
You can safely include meat in your diet. It just depends on the type of meat you choose and how you prepare it. Select leaner cuts and smaller portions of meat , such as:
- lean beef: chuck, sirloin, or loin
- lean pork cuts: the tenderloin or loin chop
- lamb: cuts from the leg, arm, and loin
- ground beef thats made of 90 percent or higher lean meat
- meats labeled prime mean theyre higher in fat look for meats labeled choice or select
How To Store Almond Milk
You should store the almond milk properly so as to get the maximum benefits of almond milk for skin, hair and your health. It should be refrigerated properly, once it is opened for use. You can also keep almond milk at room temperature but only for some time. If it is kept at room temperature for more than 24 hours, there are chances that almond milk will go bad. Therefore, you should remember to keep the opened almond milk in the refrigerator.

Do Almonds Lower Cholesterol
There have been multiple studies that have looked at the effect that almonds have on lipids, and the results appear promising. These studies have looked at a wide range of individuals, including those with high cholesterol, normal cholesterol levels, diabetes, and who are obese, consuming anywhere between 20 to 168 g of almonds a day for 4 to 16 weeks. This is roughly equivalent to 1 to 6 handfuls of almonds a day. In some studies, almonds replaced some of the fats consumed in the diet, whereas in other cases, almonds were added to a healthy diet. Almonds used in these studies were either raw, roasted, or supplemented in other healthy foods.
Studies to date have suggested that almond consumption may be associated with reduced cholesterol levels of 3% to 25% and with reduced LDL cholesterol levels by 4% to 35%
Larger studies are required to confirm these promising results.
The effects of almonds on HDL cholesterol vary. While some studies have noted a slight increase in HDL of up to about 4%. other studies have seen no impact on HDL levels. In most studies, triglyceride levels also appear unaffected by almond consumption.
Does Cow’s Milk Have Cholesterol
Whole cow’s milk has 149 calories and 24 milligrams of cholesterol in an 8-ounce serving.
Milk comes not just from cows , but also from plant-based sources such as soybeans, almonds, rice, and coconuts. Dairy milk from a cow is available in different varieties of fat content, and plant-based milk has varying amounts of calories and cholesterol well.
Consuming high amounts of cholesterol and calories can lead to health problems, especially heart disease. Research suggests that for most people, a moderate intake of cow’s milk does not have an adverse effect on cardiovascular health. Each 8-ounce cup of plain almond milk contains only about 2 milligrams of calcium.

In a study, researchers compared the levels and function of high-density lipoprotein in people who ate almonds every day, to the HDL levels and function of the same group of people when they ate a muffin instead. The researchers found that while participants were on the almond diet, their HDL levels and functionality improved.
Penny Kris-Etherton, distinguished professor of nutrition at Penn State, said the study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, builds on previous research on the effects of almonds on cholesterol-lowering diets.
“There’s a lot of research out there that shows a diet that includes almonds lowers low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease,” Kris-Etherton said. “But not as much was known about how almonds affect HDL cholesterol, which is considered good cholesterol and helps lower your risk of heart disease.”
An increase in this particular HDL subpopulation is meaningful, Kris-Etherton explained, because the particles have been shown to decrease overall risk of cardiovascular disease.
