Thank goodness for fatty fish, chia seeds and algae. All three contain omega-3 fatty acid, which our bodies can’t produceeven though we need it to survive.

From muscle activity to cell growth, omega-3 is essential. It’s also associated with heart health because it may help lower triglyceridesunhealthy fats in your bloodand improve blood pressure. But there’s no solid evidence that it lowers your risk of heart disease, and it’s not clear if fish oil supplements provide the same benefit as getting your fatty acid straight from the swimming source.

There’s another problem: Not only are the benefits of fish oil supplements not well established, but there are also risks associated with taking high doses of fish oil. In a meta-analysis that reviewed the results of multiple scientific studies, Dr. Christine M. Albert found that fish oil supplements were associated with an increase in atrial fibrillationan irregular and often very rapid heart rhythm that can lead to blood clots in the heart and result in death.

The study is important because meta-analysis is more reliable than individual studies. “With a meta-analysis, you can see if there are effects not detected in a single trial,” says Dr. Albert, the Lee and Harold Kapelovitz Distinguished Chair in Cardiology and chair of the Department of Cardiology in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai.

Bottom Line: Should You Take Fish Oil To Lower Your Cholesterol

Probably not. If you have high cholesterol numbers, there is good evidence to show that taking fish oil wont help you regain cholesterol balance. In fact, it could place you at higher risk of developing even higher LDL levels.

If, however, you do not have high cholesterol, taking fish oil is unlikely to raise your cholesterol levels so significantly that it makes you unhealthy. Ultimately, getting a yearly blood screening will ensure your cholesterol levels are still within healthy range while you take a supplement.

The same studies also reported that fish oil helped increase the molecule size of LDL cholesterol.

The increase in LDL cholesterol molecules makes them less likely to cling to artery walls, which can decrease your chances of developing atherosclerosis.
