Do Potato Chips Have Cholesterol

Potatoes Are Rich In Dietary Fiber And Decrease The Bad Cholesterol

Healthy Potato Chip Recipe | How To Make Low Fat, Low Calorie Potato Chips

We often hear health experts and nutritionists harping on the importance of a fiber rich diet. It is common knowledge that a fiber rich diet is great for the digestive system however, very few know that these benefits extend to cardiac health, brain health and circulatory system health. These connections may seem strange to some however, fiber benefits all these different organ groups in the body by reducing cholesterol levels specifically LDL or bad cholesterol levels. As mentioned before potatoes are a rich source of dietary fibers and as such they can have multiple potential benefits for those afflicted by high cholesterol levels.

Eating potatoes greatly reduces LDL levels. LDL or what is commonly known as bad cholesterol is the culprit behind clogging of the arteries and plaque, clogged arteries means stiff arteries that do not support adequate blood flow to different parts of the body. Clogged arteries also result in reduced blood flow from the heart which has an adverse impact on cardiac health. The plaque buildup in arteries can even break off and be transported by blood flow to the brain which can lead to strokes. Hence it is easy to see how eating potatoes can combat many of the adverse impacts of high cholesterol by supplying the body with fibers that combat LDL.

Your body turns excess carbohydrates that are not used for energy into triglycerides. Fill your plate with lower starch veggies that will not increase your triglycerides including cauliflower, mushrooms, and kale. Avoid foods that contain simple sugars like fructose. If you are looking for crispy potato chips that hold their shape and texture and are not soggy, I would recommend you use russet potatoes. The reason is the amount of starch in them.

The starch content let them have the perfect crunch element that everyone loves. They dont get soggy quickly and curl up to perfection.

However, if you cant find russet potatoes, you can also use Yukon Gold. They are also ideal for baked potato chips and crisp up just as nicely as any other.

Why Potato Chips Can Make You Feel Puffy And Bloated

Dr. Lehman tells us that most symptoms of excess potato chip consumption are primarily related to excess sodium intake. The recommended sodium intake is less than 2,300 milligrams a day, but most Americans consume over 3,200 milligrams a day, Dr. Lehman says.

One serving of potato chips is one ounce, but oftentimes potato chips are packaged in single-serve, two-ounce bags. Because who can resist opening a bag of potato chips and not finishing it, that can lead to taking in as much as 660 milligrams of sodium if you polish off the whole bagthat’s 29% of your daily recommended intake! Flavored bags, like BBQ, sour cream, or salt and vinegar, are some of the worst offenders.

There’s also a more subtle, nefarious reason why potato chips can make you feel bloated and swollen: inflammation.

“Potato chips are made with refined oils and processed carbohydrates, which are highly inflammatory. Refined oils are a class of omega-6 oils, which are inflammatory, especially when there is an imbalance of omega-3 anti-inflammatory fats. This leads to inflammation and pain throughout the body along with brain fog, fatigue, and weight gain,” says Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD a registered dietitian with Balance One Supplements.

    Secrets To Baking Potato Chips

Baking the perfect potato crisps might seem an easy task, but you have to take care of a few things to get everything right. Here are a few pro tips that will help you achieve perfect results.

    • Make sure you cut all the potato slices of equal thickness. As a result, all the potato chips will have the same texture. When you dont cut them with the same thickness, the final product will not only have different textures but will also result in uneven cooking. Some will cook through faster, while others will be undercooked. In other words, you will have to check every single slice, and it will be very inconvenient for you.
    • Make sure you always use parchment paper and never place potato slices on the baking tray directly. The slices will get stick to the tray, and it wont be fun at all. If you dont have parchment paper, you can also use aluminum foil. Also, make sure you oil the parchment paper with cooking oil.
    • People love potato chips because of their crunchy texture. So, to achieve that, you will need to use enough oil that the slices cook through easily. However, make sure you dont use too much oil. This way, the chips will turn soggy. Also, when you use too much oil, you add unnecessary fats and calories to the chips.
    • Moreover, using too much oil also burns the chips soon. So, make sure you use a sufficient amount of oil just enough to cook the potato slices through and give them a nice golden brown color.
