5 Worst High Cholesterol Foods You Must Avoid [Clinically Proven] – by Dr Sam Robbins

Our founder, Elizabeth Klodas, MD, decided to take a new approach to heart health and address the root cause of the problem nutrition and leverage something patients already do every day eat! She developed a simple, effective and delicious way to support healthy cholesterol levels with food. Its step one to better health!

Tea And High Cholesterol

Approximately half of all Americans drink tea each day, a habit which may help lower your risk for heart disease, cancer and obesity, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Depending on the type of tea you choose and the amount you drink, it may also help you lower your cholesterol levels.

Getting A Cholesterol Test

A blood sample is taken that will be used to determine the amount of bad cholesterol , good cholesterol and other fatty substances in your blood.

You may be asked not to eat for 10-12 hours before the cholesterol test, usually including when you’re asleep at night. This ensures that all food is completely digested and won’t affect the outcome of the test.

Your GP or practice nurse can carry out the cholesterol test and will take a blood sample, either using a needle and a syringe or by pricking your finger.

A newer type of test that measures non-high-density lipoprotein is now sometimes used because it’s thought to be a more accurate way of estimating cardiovascular disease risk than LDL.

Non-HDL cholesterol is total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol. It’s also not necessary to fast before the test, so it is more convenient.

I used to take thyroid, I was on it for 1.5 yrs and it got my temp and pulse up to normal but then I got my postpartum menstrual cycle 2 yrs ago and never been the same since, went off the thyroid because I was scared. Felt like I was dieing at times. Went to the ER with a panic attack once. Hormones all turned out to be low TSH 2.2, but I’ve only been using progest-e, my cycles are pretty regular. But I have bad bulging veins on my hands particularly when I’m warm. My temp and pulse are still fine, pulse tends to be 90 or above though. I will get my cholesterol checked. Been avoiding getting that done for too long.

Food Supplements That Do Not Help With Cholesterol

#cholesterolratio is ice cream bad for cholesterol levels ...

Many extracts and supplements have been promoted for their overall health benefits and lipid-lowering effects, but do they work?

We reviewed the available scientific research and found that the following supplements had no good evidence to support those claims:

  • Selenium: Supplements may help lower cholesterol in people with low levels of selenium, but not in people with normal levels of selenium. There is not enough scientific evidence to say that selenium protects against cardiovascular disease.

  • Calcium: Results here are mixed, but the bottom line is calcium supplementation does not improve cholesterol levels.

  • Garlic supplements: Raw, powdered, and aged garlic supplements had no effect on cholesterol levels.

  • Policosanol: This substance, which is extracted from sugar cane wax, did not improve cholesterol.

  • Coconut oil supplements: There is mixed evidence about the cardiovascular benefits or harm of coconut oil. It is not an evidence-based alternative treatment for high cholesterol levels.

  • Coconut water: There is no high-quality data about coconut water improving cholesterol levels.

  • Resveratrol supplements: There is no evidence that these improve cholesterol levels in humans.

  • Soy isoflavones supplements: Taking supplements of soy isoflavones does not improve cholesterol levels.

Q& a ‘if Cholesterol Is So Bad Why Do We Have It’

Why do we need cholesterol if it can be so bad for our bodies?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by the liver and used to build cell walls, create a protective glove around nerves and to make other chemicals such as hormones.

Cholesterol gets round our bodies by combining with protein to form a protective coating around tiny balls of fat absorbed from our diet termed lipoproteins. The purpose of this coating is to hold fat together, so we dont have oil slicks of fat in our bloodstream.

The two lipoproteins usually measured are low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein . LDL is like a juggernaut big clumps of fat and protein that trundle along the arteries and can only be cleared from our system by the liver. As it travels, fat can break away and enter the artery walls, becoming embedded. This build-up called atherosclerosis causes artery walls to narrow so blood cannot get through, resulting in blood clots that can trigger a heart attack or stroke.

HDL is known as good cholesterol. It is much smaller in size and hoovers up fat deposits from the artery wall as it moves around the body. This is why its important to know how much LDL and HDL are in your blood, as the ratio between these two types of fat is what really matters when it comes to risk.

You Could Develop Cancer

Okay, before you start throwing out all the Rocky Road in your freezer, let’s be clear that a little ice cream probably isn’t an issue. However, eating it every day can cause you to put on the pounds, and as the American Cancer Society explains, being overweight or obese can increase a person’s chances of developing cancers of the breast, pancreas, kidney, colon, and liver, among others.

Now, this doesn’t mean there is one ideal weight for anyone. After all, we’re all different heights, and it would be unreasonable to expect someone who is 6’2″ to weight the same as someone who is 4’5″. This is where the body mass index, or BMI, comes into play, since BMI is determined by both a person’s weight and height. So, if someone’s BMI number is too high, they may have a higher chance of developing cancer. To mitigate this risk, the American Cancer Society’s recommends managing your weight by cutting back on foods that are high in sugar, fat, and calories. And, yes, they specifically mention ice cream as a food to avoid if you want to eat healthy.

Why Is Ice Cream Bad For Your Heart

Nowadays, your typical scoop of ice cream provides around 250-350 calories and over half your daily allowance of saturated fat2 without even taking into account the ice cream cone, syrups and sprinkles that you may add into the mix. Even more shocking though is the fact that over 50% of the calories in ice cream come straight from its high fat content with the rest coming from carbohydrates.

Although indulging in the occasional ice cream every now and again wont have too much impact on your heart health, consuming it on a more regular basis may eventually impact your heart health.

With an average fat content of anywhere between 7 and 22 grams, eating too much of this high saturated fat food could see ‘bad’ cholesterol levels in your blood begin to soar leading to a build-up of fatty deposits in your arteries which increases your chances of heart disease and stroke.3

Ice cream’s high sugar content is similarly bad for your heart health since consuming too much sugar is associated with a higher risk of contracting cardiovascular disease .4

May Support Healthier Cholesterol Levels

How To Make High Protein Low Fat Ice Cream

Since its typically made with milk and cream, dairy ice cream contains lots of saturated fat. This type of fat can cause an increase in harmful cholesterol.

First, lets get a few things straight about cholesterol. This substance is something that your body makes naturally. It isnt always bad for your health.

Your body makes two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein .

HDL cholesterol is good for your health. It helps your body detoxify, and the more of it you have, the better.

LDL cholesterol isnt as benign. This type of cholesterol can be harmful to your health, and its been linked with conditions such as heart disease and strokes. You should always aim to reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol you have in your body. Saturated fat can cause LDL cholesterol levels to rise.

The full-fat dairy ingredients that are typically used in traditional ice cream contain lots of saturated fat. As a result, dairy ice cream has the potential to raise your cholesterol levels and harm your health.

There are many vegan ice cream choices that have less saturated fat that dairy ice cream. As a result, plant-based ice cream usually supports healthier cholesterol levels than frozen desserts with cows milk and cream.

Still, keep in mind that there are some plant-based ice creams that have even more saturated fat that their dairy counterparts. Its important to check out the products nutrition data label before making a purchase.

What Are The Types Of Cholesterol

Cholesterol in the blood doesn’t move through the body on its own. It combines with proteins to travel through the bloodstream. Cholesterol and protein traveling together are called lipoproteins .

Low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein are the lipoproteines that most of us have heard about.

Low-density lipoproteins, or “bad cholesterol,” can build up on the walls of the arteries. Cholesterol and other substances in the blood form plaque . Plaque buildup can make blood vessels become stiffer, narrower, or blocked. Plaque makes it easier for blood clots to form. A blood clot can block a narrowed artery and cause a heart attack or stroke.

Atherosclerosis , or hardening of the arteries, also leads to decreased blood flow to vital organs, including the brain, intestines, and kidneys.

High-density lipoproteins, or “good cholesterol,” carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver. In the liver, cholesterol is broken down and removed from the body.

High levels of LDL and low levels of HDL increase a person’s risk of heart disease.

Recommended Values When Choosing Ice Cream

When it comes to diabetics and their choice of ice cream, ie the type of ice cream they can consume, it is important to follow the following measures and values. Diabetics should look for a type of ice cream that does not contain more than 150 calories, 3 grams of saturated fat, 20 grams of carbs, 5 grams of total fat, 100 milligrams of sodium per 1/2 cup serving. In addition to these measures, nutritionists also recommend that diabetics eat ice cream in combination with other foods that contain various nutrients that help regulate blood sugar, ie affect it to be broken down much more slowly to avoid a sudden rise in blood sugar.

How Is High Cholesterol Treated

If your child has an LDL cholesterol level of 130 mg/dL or higher, your doctor will talk to you about lifestyle changes or refer you to a dietitian. The goals are to:

  • reduce fat and cholesterol in the diet
  • increase exercise
  • lose weight, if needed

Your doctor will probably do a cholesterol check again after 36 months of lifestyle changes.

Medicine might be considered for kids 10 and older whose LDL cholesterol is 190 mg/dL or higher if changes in diet and exercise haven’t worked. Kids with risk factors, such as diabetes or high blood pressure or a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease, may need treatment at lower LDL levels.
