Tea And High Cholesterol
Approximately half of all Americans drink tea each day, a habit which may help lower your risk for heart disease, cancer and obesity, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Depending on the type of tea you choose and the amount you drink, it may also help you lower your cholesterol levels.
Getting A Cholesterol Test
A blood sample is taken that will be used to determine the amount of bad cholesterol , good cholesterol and other fatty substances in your blood.
You may be asked not to eat for 10-12 hours before the cholesterol test, usually including when you’re asleep at night. This ensures that all food is completely digested and won’t affect the outcome of the test.
Your GP or practice nurse can carry out the cholesterol test and will take a blood sample, either using a needle and a syringe or by pricking your finger.
A newer type of test that measures non-high-density lipoprotein is now sometimes used because it’s thought to be a more accurate way of estimating cardiovascular disease risk than LDL.
Non-HDL cholesterol is total cholesterol minus HDL cholesterol. It’s also not necessary to fast before the test, so it is more convenient.

I used to take thyroid, I was on it for 1.5 yrs and it got my temp and pulse up to normal but then I got my postpartum menstrual cycle 2 yrs ago and never been the same since, went off the thyroid because I was scared. Felt like I was dieing at times. Went to the ER with a panic attack once. Hormones all turned out to be low TSH 2.2, but I’ve only been using progest-e, my cycles are pretty regular. But I have bad bulging veins on my hands particularly when I’m warm. My temp and pulse are still fine, pulse tends to be 90 or above though. I will get my cholesterol checked. Been avoiding getting that done for too long.

- have a family history of early cardiovascular disease for example, if your father or brother developed heart disease or had a heart attack or stroke before the age of 55, or if your mother or sister had these conditions before the age of 65
- have a close family member who has a cholesterol-related condition, such as familial hypercholesterolaemia
- are overweight or obese
- have high blood pressure or diabetes
- have another medical condition, such as kidney disease, an underactive thyroid, or an inflamed pancreas these conditions can cause increased levels of cholesterol or triglycerides

Food Supplements That Do Not Help With Cholesterol
Many extracts and supplements have been promoted for their overall health benefits and lipid-lowering effects, but do they work?
We reviewed the available scientific research and found that the following supplements had no good evidence to support those claims:
Selenium: Supplements may help lower cholesterol in people with low levels of selenium, but not in people with normal levels of selenium. There is not enough scientific evidence to say that selenium protects against cardiovascular disease.
Calcium: Results here are mixed, but the bottom line is calcium supplementation does not improve cholesterol levels.
Garlic supplements: Raw, powdered, and aged garlic supplements had no effect on cholesterol levels.
Policosanol: This substance, which is extracted from sugar cane wax, did not improve cholesterol.
Coconut oil supplements: There is mixed evidence about the cardiovascular benefits or harm of coconut oil. It is not an evidence-based alternative treatment for high cholesterol levels.
Coconut water: There is no high-quality data about coconut water improving cholesterol levels.
Resveratrol supplements: There is no evidence that these improve cholesterol levels in humans.
Soy isoflavones supplements: Taking supplements of soy isoflavones does not improve cholesterol levels.

Why do we need cholesterol if it can be so bad for our bodies?
Cholesterol is a fatty substance produced by the liver and used to build cell walls, create a protective glove around nerves and to make other chemicals such as hormones.
Cholesterol gets round our bodies by combining with protein to form a protective coating around tiny balls of fat absorbed from our diet termed lipoproteins. The purpose of this coating is to hold fat together, so we dont have oil slicks of fat in our bloodstream.

HDL is known as good cholesterol. It is much smaller in size and hoovers up fat deposits from the artery wall as it moves around the body. This is why its important to know how much LDL and HDL are in your blood, as the ratio between these two types of fat is what really matters when it comes to risk.

Okay, before you start throwing out all the Rocky Road in your freezer, let’s be clear that a little ice cream probably isn’t an issue. However, eating it every day can cause you to put on the pounds, and as the American Cancer Society explains, being overweight or obese can increase a person’s chances of developing cancers of the breast, pancreas, kidney, colon, and liver, among others.
Now, this doesn’t mean there is one ideal weight for anyone. After all, we’re all different heights, and it would be unreasonable to expect someone who is 6’2″ to weight the same as someone who is 4’5″. This is where the body mass index, or BMI, comes into play, since BMI is determined by both a person’s weight and height. Nowadays, your typical scoop of ice cream provides around 250-350 calories and over half your daily allowance of saturated fat2 without even taking into account the ice cream cone, syrups and sprinkles that you may add into the mix. Diabetics should look for a type of ice cream that does not contain more than 150 calories, 3 grams of saturated fat, 20 grams of carbs, 5 grams of total fat, 100 milligrams of sodium per 1/2 cup serving.
