Alfredo Sauce Poses As A Healthy Food

HIGH PROTEIN Spaghetti Carbonara Recipe (Low Fat Lower Calorie Healthy Carbonara Pasta)

This is purely a psychological thing for many of us, but its too easy to be fooled into thinking that Alfredo sauce over whole wheat or vegetable inspired pasta is actually a healthy meal when compared to fast food. The danger in this kind of thinking is that it is faulty. Most of us understand the dangers of fast food, particularly those which are made with processed food ingredients, excessive salt, deep fried and so forth. We get that, but we dont look at Alfredo in the same way unless its brought to our attention. This is just one of the ways that its worse for you than fast food.

Pasta Sauces Generally Do Well On Reference Intakes And Ingredients But Not All Are The Same

Pasta sauce is not an expensive product to begin with so paying less really looks like a false economy

When it comes to throwing a meal together in minutes, there is little handier than a ready-made pasta sauce. Cook the pasta. Warm the sauce. Mix the two together and hey presto, dinner is served.

But how does it measure up once you examine the label?

Are there secrets hiding in plain sight?

In recent weeks, we learned that Irish people like unhealthy ultra-processed food and almost half a shopping basket can be taken up with it.

Whats good to know, however, is that a simple pasta sauce does not qualify as ultra-processed.

A 350g jar of Loyd Grossmans Tomato and Basil sauce, for example, is not very different from something you might make at home. The main ingredient is tomatoes at 61 per cent, followed by tomato puree, garlic, basil, sugar, sunflower oil, extra virgin olive oil, salt, concentrated lemon juice and black pepper. The nutrition information shows there is 4.8g of sugar per 100g, which is just over one teaspoon. But tomatoes being technically fruit are sweet, so there is unlikely to be much added sugar. It also says one serving counts as one of your five a day, ie fruit or vegetable. The label also mentions that half a jar contains energy 449kj/107kcal, 5 per cent of an adults reference intake.

Its not a judgment on the products nutritional value, just an indicator as to its composition.

Pasta Is High In Carbs

Pasta is high in carbs, with a one-cup serving of cooked spaghetti containing between 3743 grams, depending on whether it is refined or whole-grain .

Carbs are broken down quickly into glucose in the bloodstream, which results in a sharp rise in blood sugar. Refined pasta, in particular, is higher in carbs and lower in fiber than whole-grain pasta.

Additionally, simple carbs like refined pasta are digested very quickly, leading to increased hunger and a higher risk of overeating .

For this reason, those who have diabetes are advised to keep carb intake in moderation and eat plenty of fiber. Making these changes slows the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels.

High-carb diets have also been linked to numerous health conditions, including:

  • Diabetes: Some studies have shown that high-carb diets may be associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes (
  • ).

However, all these studies are observational, meaning they only show association.

Further research is needed to determine how much of a role carb intake may have on these conditions versus other factors.

Summary Pasta is high in carbs. High-carb diets can raise blood sugar levels and may be associated with an increased risk of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity.

In addition, it amounts to a meal that consists of a lot of unhealthy carbohydrates. While some people try to make it a little healthier by adding a few florets of broccoli and some lean and healthy chicken meat. While these are good additions and they are definitely healthy foods, they dont negate the effects of the other ingredients. Rich And Red Tomatoes May Help Cut Your Cancer Risk

Why You Should Exclude White Pasta From Your Diet

Garlic Butter Chicken Pasta Recipe – Cholesterol Overdose

One of the mainreasons why you should avoidwhite pasta in your diet is because this popular staple is made largelyfrom refined white flour. Refined white flour in itself contains almost no dietarygoodness in itself and its consumption can have negative effects on health, aswe shall see. By the way, before I go any further, I’m only talking about the pasta itself here and not any sauce that you might add to it. Popular pasta sauces are usually tomato based and contain such herbs as oregano and basil and lend themselves to the Mediterranean diet type of thing. But I digress. Back to the bad stuff…

Eatingwhite pasta can be likened to eating cardboard, because although it tastes alittle better, cardboard probably contains more goodness! The lack of nutrientsin white pasta may not make it such a bad thing to eat on its own, but its thebad constituents of white pasta that make it such a bad deal when it comes toyour general health and weight.

The effecton the bodys metabolism is to slow it down, while inhibiting efficientdigestion. The result is more fat storage, with those fat cells generally beingdeposited around the belly. This, as you have probably already figured out is aleading cause of weight gain in people who eat a lot of refined flour products, not least of those being white pasta.

FUN PASTA FACTS

May Keep Bones Strong

Though calcium is the primary mineral found in your bones, its not the only nutrient your body needs to keep your bones healthy and strong. Vitamin K and lycopene also play important roles in promoting bone growth and preventing bone loss.

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin best known for the role it plays in helping form blood clots. But these fat-soluble vitamins also promote bone health by activating proteins that support bone formation and mineralization.

There is some evidence that diets rich in carotenoids increase bone mineral density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, a serious bone disease that makes you more susceptible to fractures. It is theorized that the antioxidant properties in carotenoids like lycopene play a role in supporting bone health.

A small pilot study published in January 2020 investigated how daily consumption of a lycopene-rich tomato sauce affects bone mineralization and bone loss in a group of postmenopausal women. The researchers found that the lycopene-rich sauce may protect bones by preventing bone loss.

The researchers also theorize that lycopene may support bone growth by positively influencing bone cell and collagen production. Marinara sauce is rich in both vitamin K and lycopene, and also has a small amount of calcium.

May Protect Against Cancer

Marinara sauce is rich in an antioxidant called lycopene. Part of the carotenoid family, like beta-carotene, lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes, and your sauce, red.

Carotenoids like lycopene are antioxidants that protect your body and cells from oxidative damage. Preclinical studies indicate that as antioxidants, these carotenoids protect against cancer by killing cancer cells and stopping them from growing.

There is some evidence that eating tomatoes may reduce your risk of stomach, lung, and colon cancer. Research also indicates diets high in lycopene-rich tomato products may reduce your risk of cancer death.

While the evidence is promising, most health experts agree that more research is needed before health claims can be made. Both tomatoes and marinara sauce contain lycopene, however, your body absorbs more of the lycopene and other carotenoids from the marinara sauce.
