Once the urine was received in the lab, its pH was reduced to 4 with the further addition of 1 M hydrochloric acid, then it was centrifuged at 1800 × g for 10 min at 4°C, divided into aliquots, and stored at 80°C until further analysis. Urine volume was also recorded. Analysis of blood and urine was performed when the intervention study was completed. All samples from each subject were analyzed together to reduce interbatch variation.
