Fenugreek seeds have been recently used in herbal medicine for their therapeutic hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic proprieties.

In fenugreek, the main mechanisms responsible for lowering serum triglyceride and total cholesterol include activating lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase , post heparin lipolytic activity , triglyceride lipase , lipoprotein lipase , and increased excretion of fecal bile acid, this study say.

In a clinical trial study, 24 type 2 diabetic patients were placed on 10 grams/day powdered fenugreek seeds mixed with yoghurt or soaked in hot water for 8 weeks. Findings showed that FBS, TG and VLDL-C decreased significantly after taking fenugreek seed soaked in hot water.

Cholesterol levels are undoubtedly a concern for people who care about their health status. Therefore, cholesterol levels should be carefully controlled. Luckily, there are some herbs that can help keep your cholesterol levels under control.

The Good And The Bad Cholesterol

There are two main types of Cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein or good Cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein sometimes called bad Cholesterol, but what are normal LDL levels and good LDL levels?

HDL is essentially the good Cholesterol that travels from your cells to your Liver where it is processed and removed from the body.

LDL is the bad Cholesterol when its in excess, as this is the form that travels from the Liver out through your arteries, to your peripheries. It is the LDL form of cholesterol that is most likely to clog your arteries and cause heart disease.

When the ratio of HDL / total Cholesterol is high more bad Cholesterol is being stored and circulated in the body rather than being removed from the body. This is bad news and needs to be sorted. To calculate your cholesterol ratio, divide your high-density lipoprotein Cholesterol number into your total Cholesterol number. An optimal ratio is less than 3.5

One study did show that both extremely low or extremely high HDL Cholesterol can be harmful.

Participants whose HDL Cholesterol levels were 4160 mg/dL were the least likely to experience a heart attack or die from a cardiovascular event.

However, for people with very low HDL Cholesterol levels and those with very high levels , the risk of adverse cardiovascular events and death increased.

It can be a little difficult to get your head around, and even today new information is emerging about Cholesterol so its an ongoing field of research.

Plant Stanol And Sterol Supplements For High Cholesterol

Countless seeds, grains, nuts, veggies, and fruits are rich in stanols and sterols substances. You can also find a fortified version of them in processed meals. For instance, you can get it from yogurt products, fortified margarine, and orange juice. Typical food sources include:

    • Veggies and fruits
    • Certain legumes

The way they work is relatively simple. The food you consume gets absorbed into the intestine. When the sterols and stanols make their way to the blood, they lower LDL and dont affect the HDL cholesterol.

Reports show that if you consume 2g of plant stanols or sterols a day, you could lower LDL from 6% to 15%. Focusing on a plant-based diet is not enough to get the desired daily intake. To replace the cholesterol-lowering medication, the doctor might recommend you opt for sterols or stanols.

Therefore, experts suggest using stanol and sterol cholesterol-lowering supplements. The content of the supplement may vary, so you should check the label to know the exact amount of plant sterols and stanols you are taking.

This is a practical alternative for those looking to reduce the need for statin medicine to lower cholesterol. For achieving the ideal results, you should spread the supplement dose evenly throughout the day.

    Get Your Fill Of Fiber

Ideally, you should be getting 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day, says Dr. Cho. Fiber binds to cholesterol and eliminates it from your body. To increase your fiber intake, eat more whole grains, legumes like beans and lentils, vegetables and fruits. You should be getting a good mix of both soluble fibers, which are more beneficial for cholesterol, and insoluble fibers, which are better for your gut health. Getting enough fiber also reduces your risk of diseases, prevents constipation and keeps you feeling full for longer.

For the HDL cholesterol category, a trend toward an intervention-related increase was observed for 6 of the 12 trials however, only 1 of these trials showed a statistically significant increase when compared with the control group . For the triglyceride category, a trend toward intervention-related reduction was also observed for 5 of the 10 trials but only 2 of these trials showed a statistically significant reduction when compared with the control group .

Ocimum basilicum is a medicinal plant used to lower plasma cholesterol and also reduce the risk of atherosclerosis-related diseases. However, mechanisms underlying the reported hypolipidaemic effect of this plant have not been investigated, they say.

A study has been conducted using basilicum extract in Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidaemic rats, evaluating the lipid lowering effect of this plant.

At 24 h following Ocimum basilicum administration, total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol levels decreased by 56%, 63% and 68%. These results indicate that Ocimum basilicum extract may contain hypolipidaemic and antioxidant substances and its use as a therapeutic tool in hyperlipidaemic subjects may be of benefit and encourage further investigation in this field.
