Ethyl Esters Vs Triglycerides It May Not Really Matter

How Good For You is Fish Oil Really? | FRONTLINE

When it comes to determining whether the triglyceride form of omega-3 is somehow better or safer than the ethyl ester form, this post provides some food for thought, but at the end of the day it does not take sides. The post suggests that after reviewing the scientific literature in terms of bioavailability, safety or efficacy, that the differences are minor and cannot be considered to be significantly different. It should be noted that Scientific Based Health, where the post appears, sells dietary supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids from both forms.

But back to ethyl ester. There is a third wayin addition to conventional diet and nutritional supplementsto access the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. And that option is prescription drugs.

There are currently two FDA-approved prescription fish oil medications available, both using ethyl esters. Lovaza combines EPA and DHA , while Vascepa includes EPA only .

This article mentions that a medical food derived from fish oil, Vascazen, is also available. Each 1-g Vascazen capsule contains at least 900 mg of ethyl esters of omega-3 fatty acids sourced from fish oils and includes approximately 680 mg of EPA and approximately 110 mg of DHA.

Alzheimers Dementia And Cognitive Function

A 2012 review of 10 studies found that omega-3 supplementation does not affect cognitive function in healthy older adults or in those with Alzheimers disease. However, for those with mild cognitive impairment, omega-3s may improve certain aspects of cognitive function, such as processing speed and attention, but more research is needed.

Studies regarding use of fish oil to manage dry eye disease are inconsistent. If you have dry eyes associated with contact lenses, fish oil supplementation may be beneficial, but more research is needed.

Are Fish Oil Supplements Safe

Omega-3 fatty acids are generally regarded as safe, however some adverse side effects have been observed in trials using prescription Omega-3s.

Espanova has been linked to adverse gastrointestinal effects including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. The EPA only medication Vascepa has not been linked to adverse gastrointestinal effects. The most commonly reported side effect in people using Vascepa was joint pain.

Because of the potential adverse side effects, the AHA recommends taking omega-3 supplements with a meal.

How To Choose A Fish Oil Supplement

Nutriforte Fish Oil Ds 1200mg 100s

There are several factors to consider when selecting a fish oil supplement:

  • Supplement quality. Its important to check the ingredient list carefully and steer clear of supplements containing fillers or artificial ingredients. Ideally, look for products that have undergone third-party testing and are certified by independent organizations, like International Fish Oil Standards , United States Pharmacopeia , NSF International, or the Therapeutic Goods Association .
  • Dosage. Pay close attention to the dosage, including the amount of EPA and DHA. Some products may also contain ALA, which is a form of omega-3 fatty acids in plants thats converted to EPA and DHA in small amounts (
  • Supplement type. There are also several forms of fish oil supplements, including softgels, liquids, or gummies. While some prefer the convenience and ease of capsules, liquids and gummies may work better for others.

Human Beings We Were Born To Fish

Our evolutionary past is tied to fish and seafood. The first hominids species i.e the first human like species appeared in the fossil records about 2.5 million years ago, that was the same time as the last ice age started .

It marked a time of significant change in the weather patterns of the earth and the previous areas our primate ancestors had inhabited were the forest regions of Northern Africa where they ate a mostly vegetarian diet. The weather became drier and cooler and that led to a reduction in the area of forestry, and the amount of available food as well. Because of this, our ancestors had to move to areas where food was more plentiful or risk extinction. To put our extinction risk in perspective, 177 large mammal species worldwide became extinct during this period .

Tips About Using Omega

When choosing fish oil supplementsLook at the amount of EPA and DHA contained in the capsule, tablet or liquid, rather than the fish oil content. For example, the product label on a fish oil supplement may say the following: Each capsule contains: Fish oil Natural 1.5g equiv. Eicosapentaenoic acid 270mg, Docosahexaenoic acid 180mg.

  • In this example, each capsule has EPA + DHA = 270mg + 180mg = 450mg of omega-3.
  • If you are unsure about how to read the labels of fish oil supplements, ask your pharmacist for advice.
  • EPA content is the most important for heart health, but very high doses are required for any benefit.
  • Meanwhile the DHA in fish oil supplements can increase LDL cholesterol , and high doses can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, bleeding, stomach upset, abnormal liver tests and rash.

Not all fish oil supplements are created equally. It is possible that omega-3 fatty acids might be lower than those stipulated on the labels because unsaturated fatty acids are susceptible to oxidation and degradation.

The Best Over The Counter Fish Oil Supplements

When it comes to fish oil supplements, the quality and concentration of the products available varies widely. Consumer labs has tested a number of products and given many their seal of approval.

Of the 17 products tested by ConsumerLab.com, 14 were ultimately approved for their quality. Some over the counter supplements actually contain nearly as much EPA or DHA as the prescription omega-3s but can be bought at a cheaper price.

Various forms of supplements were tested including capsules, chews or softgels. The level of omega-3 fatty acid contained in these products ranged from as little as 60 mg to 1420 mg.

When choosing a fish oil supplement, it is important to focus more on the amount of active ingredients in the oil rather than the total amount of oil they contain.

Some supplements are also much more highly concentrated than others. More concentrated products allow a person to consume smaller capsules but get more omega-3s into their system.

For example, both Spring Valley Fish Oil and Minami garden of Life Fish Oil contain 1000 mg of fish oil. However, the Minami softgel provides over three times more omega-3s as the Spring valley softgel.

Fish Oil Benefits For Triglycerides And Cholesterol

Kirkland Fish Oil 1000mg Softgel 400 Softgels

Fish oil has a wide range of proven medicinal benefits. It contains omega-3 fatty acids in the form of EPA and DHA which the body is unable to produce on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids are available in over the counter supplements and as prescription medications.

Several recent studies have found that prescription omega-3 fatty acids can reduce triglyceride levels in people with very high or high levels of triglycerides.

It is estimated that 25% of all adults in the U.S have high triglyceride levels. This is a cause for concern because of the evidence that high triglycerides increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In August 2019, the American Heart Association released a science advisory endorsing the use of prescription Omega 3 fatty acids to treat high triglycerides. The AHA states that they are a safe and effective option to reduce triglycerides. However, they have not endorsed over the counter omega 3s and caution against their use in managing high triglycerides.

The highlights of the advisory are as follows :

Viva Labs Ultra Strength Fish Oil

If you want a fish oil supplement that really packs a punch, look no further than Via Labs Ultra Strength. Each capsule provides a full 1000 mg of omega 3 fatty acids, and 705 mg and 245 mg of EPA and DHA.

This very high omega 3 content makes it an excellent pick for raw omega 3 content, and its super-minimalist formulation makes it well-suited for people who appreciate clean supplement design.

Why Are Omega 3 Fats Good For Health

There has been lots of research into Omega 3 fats and oily fish and how they can improve heart health.

In countries where people eat more oily fish, such as in the Mediterranean, Greenland and Japan, fewer people have heart disease compared to countries where people eat very little oily fish, such as the UK.

The Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA can help protect the heart and blood vessels from disease: They can help:

  • lower triglycerides
  • lower blood pressure
  • keep the rhythm of your heart steady.

Higher levels of the Omega 3 fats EPA and DHA in the blood have also been linked with a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. There is still research on-going, but doctors think that the benefits come from eating foods that contain omega 3s rather than over-the-counter supplements. However, some high-dose Omega 3 supplements may be prescribed by your doctor to treat hypertriglyceridaemia.

Ingredients & Potential Interactions

It is essential to carefully read the ingredient list and nutrition facts panel of a supplement to know which ingredients and how much of each ingredient is included relative to the recommended daily value of that ingredient. Please bring the supplement label to a healthcare provider to review the different ingredients contained in the supplement and any potential interactions between these ingredients and other supplements and medications you are taking.

Fish oil supplements typically contain EPA, DHA, and may also contain other fats such as omega-7 , oleic acid, or an omega-6 fat called GLA. Some fish oil supplements contain added vitamins, such as vitamin E, to help stabilize the oils to prevent them from going rancid.

Fish oil supplements can have a blood-thinning effect and may lower blood pressure slightly. If you are taking blood-thinning or blood pressure lowering medication, be sure to discuss fish oil supplement use with a healthcare provider.

Are Fish Oil Supplements Beneficial For Kids

How Does Fish Oil Work? (+ Pharmacology)

Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, and sardines are rich in the EPA and DHA omega 3 fats that research has shown to be beneficial for health. However, if your kids don’t eat fish, you may be wondering if they can get enough omega 3s from plant foods. Indeed, foods like walnuts, flax, canola oil, soy, and chia seeds, also contain omega 3 fats. However, the form of omega 3s these plant foods have, known as ALA, is not as easily converted into the EPA and DHA forms.

Therefore, it may be beneficial to ensure your child is regularly eating fatty fish or to consider supplementing with DHA and EPA. Those who may benefit from a fish oil supplement include:

Children who rarely eat fish: Manaker suggests that children may need to be exposed to fish a few times before they accept the unique taste. Adding fish to familiar foods like mac and cheese may help children eat this source of omegas a little easier. If they still aren’t eating fish regularly, talk to a healthcare provider about adding a fish oil supplement.

Children with ADHD: Fish oil is not a treatment for ADHD, however, there is some research showing that omega-3 fatty acids from either fish or plant sources may benefit children with the disorder when it comes to symptom improvement. If your child has this diagnosis, it may be worth a discussion with your healthcare provider.

Natures Bounty Fish Oil

The fish oil supplement made by Natures Bounty is probably a familiar sight. Its at drug stores and big box retailers across the country. How does its quality stack up?

In terms of raw omega 3 content, it is good but not great. Each softgel provides 750 mg of omega 3 fatty acids of these, 435 mg are EPA and 240 mg are DHA. These fatty acids account for about 60% of the total fish oil content.

Cardiac Mortality Sudden Death And All

The Diet and Reinfarction Trial 4 was one of the first studies to investigate a relationship between dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction. In this study, 1,015 men were advised to eat at least two servings of fatty fish per week, and 1,018 men were not so advised. At the two-year follow-up, the men who had been advised to consume fish had a 29 percent reduction in all-cause mortality but no reduction in the incidence of myocardial infarction.4

Sudden death caused by sustained ventricular arrhythmias accounts for 50 to 60 percent of all deaths in persons with coronary heart disease .5 To date, the largest, prospective, randomized controlled trial on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids is the GISSI-Prevenzione Trial.6 This study included 11,324 patients with known CHD who were randomized to receive either 300 mg of vitamin E, 850 mg of omega-3 fatty acids, both, or neither. After three and one-half years, the group given omega-3 fatty acids alone had a 45 percent reduction in sudden death and a 20 percent reduction in all-cause mortality.6
