What Are The Different Types Of Mcts

MCT Oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides): The Different Types

Medium-chain triglycerides MCTs are classified into four types, which are distinguished by the number of molecules in their carbon chains. In general, the shorter the chain, the more efficiently the body can process energy from molecules.

  • C6 or caproic acid or hexanoic acid:
  • Made up of 6 carbon molecules
  • Quickly metabolized and ideal for short bursts of energy
  • Frequently removed during processing due to its strong taste and odor
  • C8 or caprylic acid or octanoic acid:
  • Made up of 8 carbon molecules
  • Has antimicrobial properties
  • Useful for short bursts of energy
  • C10 or capric acid or decanoic acid:
  • Made up of 10 carbon molecules
  • Quickly converts to ketones in the liver
  • Beneficial for endurance and mental performance
  • C12 or lauric acid or dodecanoic acid:
  • Made up of 12 carbon molecules
  • Slowest to digest due to its longer carbon chain
  • Still has antimicrobial properties and a variety of health benefits
  • Specific Measures For Individual Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders

Specific measures for individual FAO disorders include the following:

Medium-chain triglyceride oil. Medium-chain fatty acids as MCT oil could be useful in long-chain FAO disorders as they would circumvent the block in long-chain FAO and thereby facilitate ATP production from the remainder of the patent FAO pathway. The MCT oil could be started at a dose of 0.5 g/kg/day divided in three daily doses and could be increased up to 1 or 1.5 g/kg/day as tolerated. The major side-effect is diarrhea. The success of MCT oil supplementation in LCHAD deficiency has been variable . When a high percentage of energy from fat is provided by MCT oil, patients are at risk for EFA deficiency and should therefore be supplemented with EFA .

Riboflavin. Certain cases of multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency are responsive to riboflavin supplementation .

    Mct Oils In Beauty Products

MCT oil is a relatively new player in the beauty and personal care sectors but is poised to become a valuable addition. Following the popularity of coconut oil in skin care, moisturizers and other beauty products, MCT can offer many of the same benefits. MCT oil is great for adding moisture to the skin or lips and can be incorporated in lotions, moisturizers or creams. MCT oil is lightweight and does not leave skin feeling oily or greasy when used as a moisturizer.

Beauty products with MCT oil are perfect for those with sensitive skin because MCT is colorless, odorless and not harsh on the skin. MCT is also effective in massage oils as it does not clog pores. The beauty and personal care industries provide a lot of opportunities to use the health benefits of MCTs and MCT oil, and MCT use is likely to continue to expand in these industries.

    Mct Oil Ketones And Nootropics

    Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)

When glucose and glycogen stores are depleted, which is typically during or after exercise or after several hours of fasting, body cells switch to using fats and ketones as a source of energy. The exciting discovery is that like glucose, ketones also have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and be utilised by brain cells as a source of fuel.

Health Benefits Of Mcts And Mct Oil

MCT and MCT oil have gained popularity as a health food and dietary supplement because of the numerous benefits they offer. In addition to providing quick and efficient energy, MCT oil can aid in weight loss, improve brain functioning and provide treatment for digestive diseases.

Here are a few of the main health benefits of MCTs and MCT oil:

MCTs and MCT oil can also be used to supplement treatments for more severe diseases, such as liver disease and celiac disease. MCTs have been used for a long time to treat malnutrition because they are easy for the body to digest and convert to energy. MCTs can also be used for patients who must receive food intravenously, such as after a gastrectomy.

    Metabolism Of Medium Chain Triglyceride

MCT contain MCFA attached to glycerol molecule. The metabolism, digestion and absorption of MCT is different than that of LCT. Human endogenous enzyme lipase brings about hydrolysis of MCT. After hydrolysis the MCFA are released from glycerol backbone and because of its hydrophilic nature and shorten carbon chain these MCFA are directly transported via hepatic portal vein to liver. These fatty acids undergo -oxidation process. This quick metabolism of MCFA results in formation of ketones body. These ketone body act as an immediate energy source to body. The hydrolysed medium chain fatty acid does not go to lymphatic system for re-synthesis of triglyceride molecule which has ability to be stored in the form of adipose tissue as fat, leading to obesity .

    What Are Mediumchain Triglycerides

    Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)

Mediumchain triglycerides are a type of fat which contain medium chain fatty acids. Mediumchain fatty acids contain between 8 to 12 carbon atoms in their fatty acid chains and are typically saturated1. They are usually very limited in western diets with coconut and palm being the only rich sources. The predominant form of fat in western diets is longchain triglyceride which contain at least 14 carbon atoms in their fatty acid chains and can be saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsaturated2.

    How it works:

MCT has many different clinical applications which relate to it being a useful source of energy when LCT needs to be restricted. Due to having a shorter chain length, MCT is digested and transported differently to LCT: it does not require bile acids/salts to emulsify it it is more easily hydrolysed than LCT it is absorbed directly into the portal venous circulation3. MCT does not need to be packaged into chylomicrons and therefore does not use the lymphatic system for transportation unlike LCT.

    Where is MCT used:

The different clinical applications include liver and gallbladder disease, pancreatic enzyme insufficiency, pancreatitis, chylothorax, intestinal lymphangiectasia and type 1 hyperlipidaemia. All require the manipulation of dietary fat for successful dietetic management4. MCT can be a useful source of energy when LCT is restricted due to its energy density and how it is absorbed and transported differently.

Application To The Health Issues Among Elderly

Most of the clinical applications research of MCTs have been in the medical field, for post-surgical nutrition management and specific lipid absorption disorders. But in the 1980s, research started again on healthy subjects, in areas such as obesity prevention and sports activities. In the 2000s, studies have been particularly conducted on the elderly.

Malnutrition, frailty, and dementia are major health issues among the elderly. A recent trilateral study from China, Japan, and Taiwan reported that the incidence of malnutrition is higher in people over 70 years old . Malnutrition is interrelated with sarcopenia, frailty, and the development of dementia. This is important in the matter of healthy life expectancy in the elderly .

    Figure 2. Frailty cycle .

In the elderly, the balance of energy intake is considered to be negatively skewed by both a reduction in food intake resulting from complex factors and increased energy metabolism due to chronic diseases and cancer.

Frailty is defined as a condition in which mental and physical vitality declines with age, and life functions are impaired due to the coexistence of multiple chronic diseases, resulting in the emergence of mental and physical vulnerability, but with appropriate intervention and support, it is possible to maintain and improve life functions .

Application To Exercise And Physical Activity

Energy substrates of skeletal muscle during physical activity include carbohydrates and lipids. Carbohydrates are more efficient in producing adenosine triphosphate and carbohydrates are used more frequently . In recent years, various studies have been conducted on the utilization of lipids in exercise.

It is known that more energy is required during exercise than at rest, and that energy expenditure per unit of time increases in proportion to the intensity of exercise . Among athletes who exercise heavily, some experience an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. In 2007 the American College of Sports Medicine published a position stand on the female athlete triad, and listed low energy availability with or without an eating disorder instead of disordered eating as one of the three main characteristics. One of its statements includes: the first aim of treatment for any triad component is to increase energy availability by increasing energy intake and/or reducing exercise energy expenditure . From this perspective, the intake of lipids is considered important as an efficient energy source in athletes with a high level of physical activity.

What are examples of medium-chain triglycerides?

Medium-chain triglyceride sources include dairy fat and coconut oil, according to the authors of the International Dairy Journal article. Other MCT foods include goat milk and palm kernel oil. Though the number of MCT foods is limited, if you drink milk, chances are youre still getting some in your diet naturally.

How many carbons are in a medium chain fatty acid?

Most fatty acids called long-chain fatty acids have 12 to 22 molecules of carbon. Medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, are saturated fats containing 8 to 12 carbons.

Effect Of Mct On Energy Expenditure

Animal trials studying the effects of MCT vs. LCT consumption on lipid and energy metabolism have shown that body weight is reduced with MCT consumption compared with LCT consumption and that feed efficiency is thus reduced . In a study in which rats infused with MCT gained one third of the weight gained by those infused with LCT, Lasekan et al. concluded that replacing LCT with MCT over long periods could produce weight loss without decreasing energy intakes.

Human studies have mainly compared the effects of MCT vs. LCT in single-meal or single-day experiments. Scalfi et al. evaluated the effects of a single mixed meal containing MCT on postprandial thermogenesis and examined possible differences in the thermic response between lean and obese men. Subjects consumed a meal containing 15% of energy from protein, 55% from carbohydrate and 30% from fat, in the form of corn oil and animal fat or MCT oil in random order. Energy expenditure measurements were conducted before and for 6 h after consumption of the meal. Total EE was 48 and 65% greater in lean and obese individuals, respectively, after MCT compared with LCT consumption. Similar results were obtained by Seaton et al. comparing the effects of MCT or CO on EE after a single meal. Energy expenditure peaked at 16% above baseline after MCT consumption compared with 5% for CO.

Can You Cook With Mct Oil

Yes you can, but there are a few culinary guidelines that you need to follow. Most fats become damaged or oxidised during cooking, making them more harmful to the body. MCT oil however is stable up to temperatures of 160C or 320F so MCT oil is suitable for use with any baking recipes that are cooked below 160C or 320F. However, it’s best to avoid frying with MCT oil as this method of cooking is too hot and is likely to denature the medium chain triglycerides. There are no restrictions for adding MCT oil to raw food recipes or room temperature recipes such as smoothies, salad dressings, overnight oats and energy balls. Lowered Blood Sugar Levels

Medium-Chain Triglycerides: Useful supplement or hype?

MCTs may also help to improve blood sugar levels and play a potential role in diabetes management.

MCTs from dietary sources and MCT oil may have some health benefits. However, it is important to remember that when a person consumes these, they are consuming fats.

Taking MCT oil adds extra fats and calories to a persons diet. As such, excessive use of MCT oil may not be beneficial and could lead a person to gain weight.

MCT oil supplements are created from versions of food oils, and so are not considered a natural product.

It is important to remember that MCT oil has a low smoke point, so it is not suitable for cooking.

However, solid coconut oil, which is high in MCTs, can be used in cooking and may be used to replace olive oil or other cooking oils.

    Type 1 Diabetes And Mcts

Some sources discourage people with type 1 diabetes from taking medium-chain triglycerides due to the accompanying production of ketones.

Its thought that high levels of ketones in the blood may increase the risk of ketoacidosis, a very serious condition that can occur in people with type 1 diabetes.

However, the nutritional ketosis a low-carb diet causes is completely different than diabetic ketoacidosis, a very serious condition that a lack of insulin causes.

In people with well-managed diabetes and healthy blood sugar levels, ketone levels remain within a safe range even during ketosis.

There are limited recent studies available that explore the use of MCTs in those with type 1 diabetes. However, some older studies that have been conducted observed no harmful effects .

    SUMMARY

MCT oil is safe for most people, but there are no clear dosage guidelines. Start with small doses and gradually increase your intake.

Is Mct Oil Or Coconut Oil Better

MCT oil is vastly superior as it comprises only the key medium chain fats that are readily converted into energy and ketones which help facilitate a state of ketosis. As a general guide you would need to take six tablespoons of coconut oil to gain the same amount of those helpful medium chain triglycerides found in just one tablespoon of True MCT oil.

Do Mct Oils Have Health Benefits

MCT oils were first used in the clinical setting for people with gastrointestinal conditions that prevented them from properly digesting and absorbing long-chain fatty acidsincluding people with celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel disease and cystic fibrosis.

Because of their ability to serve as an efficient source of energy, they have become popular with athletes and people trying to lose weight. A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials in healthy adults showed that when compared with LCTs, MCTs reduced body weight, waist and hip circumference, total body fat, total subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. However, although the differences were statistically significant, they were relatively small: For example, people consuming MCTs lost an average of one more pound . Participants were not followed after the studies concluded, so its unknown whether or not they were able to maintain any weight loss that was observed. While there have been a few studies on the effects of MCT oil on athletic performance, more research is needed to draw any strong conclusions.

The health effects of MCT oil on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurological conditions like Alzheimers disease have been studied, but there is no conclusive evidence of a benefit for any of these conditions.
