Mct May Stimulate The Release Of Hunger Hormones

Mary Newport, M.D.: Medium Chain Triglycerides and Ketones for Alzheimers and Other Disorders

While MCTs may increase the release of hormones that help you feel fuller longer, they may also stimulate the release of hunger hormones in some people .

A study involving people with anorexia found that MCTs increased the release of two hormones that stimulate appetite: ghrelin and neuropeptide Y .

People who took more than 6 grams of MCTs per day produced more of these hormones than those who had less than 1 gram per day.

However, its unclear whether the increase in these hormones actually causes you to eat more.

Coconut Oil for Alzheimerâs and Dementia: The Evidence

Four studies measured overall working memory, using the spatial working memory task , N-back , and Digit and Spatial Span Tests . Two studies tested immediate memory recall using a mini-mental state exam , while one study measured immediate and delayed memory using the verbal recognition memory task . Logical memory was evaluated via the Nishimura geriatric rating scale for mental status and via the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised test through immediate recall and delayed recall . Finally, one study measured visual memory through visual memory span test and short-term memory through a letter-number sequencing test .

The SWM task examines the ability to remember and modify spatial information, in which participants search for blue tokens from multiple squares on a screen. After a blue token is found, participants should find the next token that is not being hidden in the previous box.

During the N-back test, participants are required to press a button each time they see the letter X, defined as the 0-back condition. In addition, participants need to press the button in which the letter they saw was identical to the letter that was observed two letters before, known as the 2-back condition.

The Digit Span test assess the ability of repeating a series of numbers backwards, while the Spatial Span test examines the ability of tapping blocks in a certain predetermined order.

Popular Uses For Mct Oil

MCT oil is mostly sold as a supplement to aid weight loss or improve athletic performance.

Its popular with bodybuilders and endurance athletes who use it to increase energy, decrease body fat, and increase lean muscle mass.

But the scientific evidence to support these benefits of MCT oil is mixed.

And taking enough MCT oil to reap these benefits is not always practical.

For example, its thought that to experience any significant weight loss, youd have to eat half your daily calories in MCT oil!

And taking MCT oil for physical performance presents a dilemma since the amount of MCT oil needed to increase endurance is generally enough to cause diarrhea.

However, one area where MCT oil shows great promise is as a supplement to support brain health and function.

I have MCI and when I started using Coconut oil & MCT I started gaining weight. It freaked me out and I stopped. At one point in my life I had lost about 100 lbs and so I am very worried about gaining weight. I have been a Vegan for 5 or 6 years and am very aware of what I eat. I make sure to get enough protein everyday and for the first time since I lost the weight, I do not have to worry as much about my weight, but to consume that much Coconut oil per day, I have to eat less or omit other very healthy foods.I try to sneak a Tablespoon in some days, but if I try to consume the recommended amount, I start gaining weight .

  • Mct Could Help Manage Blood Sugar Levels

MCT oil may also have benefits for those with diabetes . MCTs have been shown to reduce fat storage and increase fat burning, which can aid in managing the condition .

One small, older study of 40 people with diabetes found that those who consumed MCT oil daily saw reductions in body weight, waist circumference, and insulin resistance, compared to those taking corn oil containing LCTs .

Another study found that when 10 people with diabetes were injected with insulin, they needed 30% less sugar to maintain normal blood sugar levels when they consumed MCTs, compared to LCTs .

However, the same study did not find any effect of MCTs on reducing fasting blood sugar levels .

Therefore, other factors such as timing and the amount of food eaten may influence the effects of MCT oil.

    Summary

MCT oil could potentially help manage diabetes by reducing fat storage and increasing fat burning. It may also help manage blood sugar.

    How To Use Mct Oil

MCT oil is available as both a liquid and as a powder supplement.

You can take the oil by the spoonful or add it to drinks or foods.

Medium-chain triglycerides are water-soluble, so MCT oil readily mixes with foods.

And since it is virtually tasteless, the uses for MCT oil are limited only by your imagination.

You can add it to smoothies, soups, stews, yogurt, salad dressings, spreads, and drinks of all kinds, both hot and cold.

But dont cook with it since it has a low smoke point and burns at 150° C .

You may have heard about MCT oil as an ingredient in Bulletproof coffee, a trendy brain-boosting drink.

You can make your own coffee bulletproof by adding grass-fed butter and MCT oil.

Putting butter in coffee is not as weird as it sounds.

The people of Tibet traditionally add yak butter to their tea, which is how Dave Asprey, Bulletproof coffees creator, got his inspiration.

And butter is simply churned cream.

Asprey and his followers report steady energy, better mood, reduced feelings of hunger, and enhanced mental clarity and physical performance when they drink coffee dosed with MCT oil.

Mct Oil: A Potential Alzheimers Treatment

Medium Chain Triglycerides & Your Brain

One of the most promising uses for MCT oil is for treating dementia and Alzheimers disease.

Some experts now consider Alzheimers a type of diabetes of the brain when brain cells lose their ability to absorb glucose, their main source of energy, they subsequently die.

PET scans show that areas of the brain affected by Alzheimers readily take up ketones as an alternative fuel source.

While ketogenic diets can be useful for dementia and Alzheimers patients, it is notoriously difficult to get them to change their eating habits.

The use of supplemental MCT oil can provide a partial solution.

As a veteran neonatal physician, she was familiar with the use of MCT oil to feed newborns.

When her husband developed early-onset Alzheimers, she fed him a mix of MCT oil and coconut oil to fuel his brain.

She has since written a comprehensive second book, The Complete Book of Ketones: A Practical Guide to Ketogenic Diets and Ketone Supplements.

Coconut Oil For Alzheimers: Does It Fight Dementia

The food you eat has an enormous impact on your risk of developing Alzheimers disease or dementia. Recent studies hint that coconut oil can be a helpful element in the fight against dementia as part of an anti-inflammatory diet, along with healthy lifestyle choices.

Dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects brain function. It can be hereditary or caused by environmental factors. The hallmark of dementia is cognitive decline. Dementia patients also display symptoms like memory loss and impaired judgment.

Alzheimers disease is one type of dementia, but not all dementia is Alzheimers. Alzheimers disease involves the formation of beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles in brain cells . Over time, the plaques and tangles kill neurons, affecting cognitive function.

Emerging research is also pointing toward inflammation as a potential cause of Alzheimers. Many recent studies suggest that these tangles in the brain may be protective reactions against inflammation. These are just a few of many reasons to eat an anti-inflammatory diet.

These structures can only be definitively diagnosed by sampling and examining brain tissue directly. Thats why Alzheimers is almost exclusively diagnosed after the patient dies.

    Quality Assessment Of Studies

The quality of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk-of-bias 2 tool and evaluated by three independent reviewers . Appraisal of bias risk using the RoB2 tool included assessment of the domains of bias in randomized clinical trials: randomization process deviations from intended interventions missing outcome data measurement of the outcome selection of the reported result. According to the RoB2 tool scoring system, study quality was defined as low, some concerns, or high risk of bias.

Frequently Asked Questions About Coconut Oil

As a newer breakthrough, there are many swirling questions about coconut oil. Here are some of the most common.

Does coconut oil cross the blood-brain barrier? Coconut oil does not cross the blood-brain barrier, at least not directly. It is broken down during digestion into smaller molecules, including ketones. Then, the ketones cross the blood-brain barrier and are used as an energy source.

How does coconut oil improve memory? Coconut oil improves memory by supporting the health of the neurons in your brain. It provides energy to neurons so they can function. Coconut oil also helps protect neurons by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

What are the benefits of coconut oil for dementia? The benefits of coconut oil for dementia are:

    • Providing ketones the brain needs for energy
    • Reducing oxidative stress that can make dementia symptoms worse
    • Improving insulin resistance, which makes it easier for neurons to get the energy they need

To maximize the effects of coconut oil, try virgin coconut oil if you can find it. Virgin coconut oil has been through fewer refining processes, so its purer.

What is the recommended dosage of coconut oil for memory? The recommended dosage of coconut oil for memory varies by patient, and should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider. C

How Mct Oil Nourishes The Brain

Therapeutic Intervention in early Alzheimers Disease with Medium Chain Triglycerides

The brain cannot store energy, so it needs a constant and steady energy stream thats normally supplied by blood glucose.

Fortunately, theres a backup energy source for the times when blood sugar level gets low.

When needed, your liver can break down stored body fat to produce ketones.

Ketones readily cross the blood-brain barrier to provide instant energy to the brain.

When MCT oil was given to adults with mild cognitive impairment, they experienced significant improvement in memory recall within 90 minutes of taking their first dose.

And while you can provide ketones for your brain by eating a very high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet, you dont have to.

The medium-chain fats in MCT oil raise the blood level of ketones, thus providing a convenient workaround.

    MCT Oils Brain Benefits

Taking MCT oil has been found to increase brain energy by 8 to 9%.

MCTs can delay brain aging by promoting the repair of brain cell damage, especially when combined with a high-fat diet.

MCT oil can help optimize intestinal flora which is surprisingly important to brain health.

Your good gut bacteria produce dozens of neurotransmitters, brain chemicals used by brain cells to communicate with each other.

Notably, two important feel-good neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine are created mainly in your intestines.

Good bacteria also reduce brain inflammation, now thought to be a possible root cause of depression.

Mct Oil Vs Coconut Oil: How They Compare

Depending on the brand you use, MCT oil can contain up to 18 times more MCTs per serving than coconut oil.

But since MCTs are isolated from coconut oil by a process called fractionation, they do not contain the same nutrients as coconut oil, a healthy traditional food.

Notably, MCT oil does not contain lauric acid, a compound found in abundance in coconut oil.

Lauric acid is antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal, making it responsible for many of coconut oils health properties.

Both MCT oil and coconut oil bring their own unique set of benefits to the table, but theres no reason you have to choose between them.

You can add coconut oil to your diet and take supplemental MCT oil.

In fact, whether or not you decide to take supplemental MCT oil, I urge you to minimize your consumption of highly processed vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, and soy oil.

These supposedly healthy oils have been a health disaster.

Instead, use coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil two brain-healthy oils that should be stocked in every kitchen.
